Billy Atkins (William Ellis Atkins) was born on November 19, 1934 in Millport, Alabama. After going to high school at Millport (AL), Atkins attended Auburn University. Atkins made his professional debut in the NFL in 1958 with the San Francisco 49ers. He played in the NFL for 2 years, playing for the San Francisco 49ers the entire time. Atkins also played in the AFL for 5 years, playing for the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, New York Titans and New York Jets over the course of his 5 year AFL career.

Most people believe that 1961 was Billy Atkins's best year, as he picked off 10 passes and had a 44.5 yard punt average.
