On the scoreboard, the Buffalo Bills were upended by the Denver Broncos 15-14 in the waning seconds of yesterday's contest at Ralph Wilson Stadium, a heartbreaking defeat for the Bills and their fans.
However, the pain goes much further than that for Kevin Everett.
Everett was taken off the field in an ambulance following the kickoff to start the second half after a helmet to helmet hit with Denver kick returner Domenick Hixon. Everett hit the ground, and lost consciousness. He went into emergency surgery at Buffalo General Hospital for a cervical spine injury. Doctors have stated that bone chips were removed from Everett's neck. After the surgery, Everett was stabilized and moved into intensive care on a respirator.
As of this morning, it has been reported that Everett has sparse movement and some feeling in his extremities. The Bills will not release a statement until they hear from the doctors, as Marv Levy said: "Certainly, we feel the injury is serious, but I don't want to speculate, and that's what the doctors told us," Levy told AP. "They told us to wait to hear from them before making any speculative announcement."
The injury capped off what was a brutal day injury wise for the Bills, who lost three defensive starters to injury as free safety Ko Simpson left with a broken ankle, cornerback Jason Webster broke a forearm, and Coy Wire, who was playing for the injured Keith Ellison, sprained a knee.
Marshawn Lynch had a stellar debut for the Bills, rushing 19 times for 90 yards and a 23 yard touchdown, where he broke several tackles, bulling his way to the end zone, to give Buffalo a 14-6 lead. The 90 yards Lynch put up were a Bills rookie record for rushing yards in a rookie's first contest. Lee Evans was stifled by the Denver secondary, catching just two passes for five yards.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kevin Everett, and I will update this as things come to light regarding his condition over the next 24 to 48 hours. While it seems his NFL career most likely is over, that is far from the main concern at this point in time. His health, well being and ability to move and have a decent quality of life is what is most important.
