Bill Walton Is In Rare Form

Our favorite color commentator is back at it again tonight showing for the world to see once and for all why you should never do acid. Here are a few exchanges to highlight Walton’s level of excellence.

(lebron pepares for a sick dunk)

Saunders: uh oh

(lebron throws down the jam)

Saunders (jovially): As Lebron is getting ready to go up there the only words that came to mind were uh oh, which is probably what the Uruguayans were thinking. (Chuckles)

Walton: that’s also what the citizens of New Orleans were thinking 2 years ago tonight as Katrina ravaged their city…

Walton: 2 pointers are easier to hit then 3’s…. lets put it this way the big men like Amare want to shoot the threes and the little guys want to throw it down

Saunders: It’s like how athletes want to be rock stars and rock stars want to be athletes Walton (exuberantly): Did you see Dylan’s new dates!?!

I could write about how his first comments were incredibly out of place and inappropriate in that context or how Walton once again proved how much of a hippy he is with his second comments, but I think that goes without saying. Darn, guess I just said it.

Am I the only on that thinks Wlaton reminds me more of Donald Sutherland's Teacher role in Animal House every day?

I'm one of the few basketball fans who actually enjoys Bill Walton as a commentator. But, I only enjoy him if the game is not very important. When games get out of hand (like these Tourney of Americas USA games) he is able to keep me entertained. I would never want him to do an NBA Finals game, though. He drifts off to easily.

How about the tangeant he went on about Jay-Z's shirt, and how that related to Uruguay being a nation filled with colorful birds, and how that related to Uruhuay never being heavily colonized by Europeans, and how that related to Batista's jump shot, and so on...

sometimes i wonder if Walton is looking at the wikipedia entry for each country as he broadcasts the game.

I think he prints out the Wikipedia page for every Team USA opponent and recites various portions of them during the game. I don't even think he studies and memorizes it, I think he's literally reading of the sheet. I say this because during the USA'a games against Brazil, Walton was going on and on about something Brazilian while the USA went on a spectacular 14-0 run in under two minutes (the kind of run that would ordinarily have Bill Walton screaming and borderline-orgasmic). I got the impression that Walton had his head down, reading whatever it was he saying on the telecast, because he didn't even break stride it rattling off his inane facts.

Say what you will about Bill. He comes across sometimes a little raw, yes, but in all the years he has been doing the games he says it as he sees it be damn the feelings of the players. If he sees something wrong he says it on TV. He's not stupid and just goes ahead and lets it all hang out. I am sure you have all heard the stories about he and John Wooden. Heads butting 101 at UCLA. But in the end his record speaks for itself and so does he. I love his broadcasts because he is funny, smart, silly and knows basketball better than any of the other broadcasters period.

Very well said. I should have included this in my previous comment. I actually like Bill Walton as an announcer. He knows the game and its history and he doesn't take himself too seriously- a really good combo. I just think he's been a little too wrapped up in rattling off geographical and demographic information during this current tournament.

Bill Walton on his worst day as a commentator still outweighs Tony Kornheiser's "best".
