Born on August 15, 1896 in McSherrystown, Pennsylvania, Bill Sherdel (William Henry Sherdel) played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Braves over the course of his 15 year career. Sherdel broke into the bigs on April 22, 1918 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 2.71 ERA in 182.1 innings pitched in 1918, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Bill Sherdel's best season was 1928, when he posted a 2.86 ERA, won 21 games and struck out 72 batters.
