Bill Mathis (William Hart Mathis) was born on December 10, 1938 in Rock Mount, North Carolina. After going to high school at Manchester (GA), Mathis attended Clemson University. Mathis made his professional debut in the AFL in 1960 with the New York Titans. He played for the New York Jets and New York Titans over the course of his 10 year career.

Most people believe that 1961 was Bill Mathis's best year, as he ran for 846 yards and ran in 7 TDs.
