Born on November 8, 1870 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bill Hoffer (William Leopold Hoffer) played for the Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Blues over the course of his 6 year career. Hoffer broke into the bigs on April 26, 1895 with the Baltimore Orioles, and put up a 3.21 ERA in 314 innings pitched in 1895, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Bill Hoffer's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1895, when he posted a 3.21 ERA, won 31 games and struck out 80 batters. However, others believe that it was 1896, when he posted a 3.38 ERA, won 25 games and struck out 93 batters.
