Bill Evers, Former Tampa Bay Devil Rays Coach, Falls Upward

behindthecage_xsm.jpg Bill Evers, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays recently-released bench coach was let go for not agreeing with skipper Joe Maddon. It's hard to yes man a guy though that took guys that you brought to two back-to-back International League championships and makes them play as poorly as they have in the majors. Where is Evers, one of the top three minor league skippers going? See MLN Sports' " Behind The Cage "

There's more to it than that... Evers didn't exactly swing a lot of power with the players - and it may have been more mutual than one-sided.

Yeah, let's just forget that Joe Maddon won several championships as a minor league manager and was the bench coach for the Angels when they won a WORLD SERIES.

And considering their historically horrendous bullpen, I think Maddon did a GREAT job this year.

Still remains to be seen what happens to pitching coach Jim Hickey after a DWI/hit and run...

Maybe because I spent time in the Rays' clubhouse and saw Evers and Maddon interact in person?

oh shit... here we go again... read this, this, then this and a whole bunch of other stuff from this

Or just peruse the Rays Opinions page

It sounds like more fun than it ended up being. Great experience but I think I got myself blackballed by MLB because of some "things".

Not officially blackballed like Jose Canseco (but I do have a book I'm working on!), but they have pretty much denied my existence. I think team Pres. Silverman was given the "don't do that again" speech from MLB and he didn't seem to like me much anyway. Especially when he said "we look at you like a version of Sports Guy for the Rays" and I responded succinctly with a "yeah, well I'm not a turd like him".

I think he felt he got duped into winning the bid when he was just trying to boost up the bid.

I made friends with all the players and clubhouse people and PR staff, but the guy at the top pulls the strings, ya know?

Screw 'em... It started as charity, but I'll keep being a Rays fan out of spite if I have to!
