Bill Cowher is a Fool

10
Vote

by user Joebook

He said he wants to spend more time with his family, including his three daughters. Two are away at college, and the other is a high school sophomore. Sorry Coach.

He said he's not burned out, but that "this is the right time" to leave. Sorry Coach.

He said he won't coach next season, but he did acknowledge that there are "several great positions" open. Sorry Coach.

So why is Bill Cowher leaving the perfect situation? Nobody knows.

He compiled a 161-99-1 record with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and if he never coaches another game, he'll be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame without question. He and Chuck Noll are the only two men to lead the team since 1969. Cowher was the head of one of the most storied franchises in professional sports.

Cowher is Pittsburgh. From that famous jawline to his roots in Crafton, Pennsylvania, to that work ethic, to his winning attitude. He is blue-collar Pittsburgh. The city embraced him from day one, and he didn't let them down. 10 AFC playoff appearances, 6 AFC title game appearances, 2 Super Bowls, and one glorious, overdue victory.

Cowher could have coached this team for the next 20 years, and probably become the winningest coach in history. He says it doesn't matter... he wants more time with the fam. I think it matters to him. He's only 49.

So why is Bill Cowher really leaving the perfect situation? No clue.

I don't buy the family argument, because he took the job at age 34, when his youngest daughter was just born. His time commitment has been unbelievable, and he's probably missed out on much of his daughters' childhoods.

So why change that now? In a little more than two years, Bill and Kaye Cowher will be empty-nesters. What will Billy do then? He'll go back to the NFL.

And his job won't be near as perfect as Pittsburgh.

I don't see his argument - an NFL coach is only needed for six months of the year, whereas all the other US Sports are needed for up to nine months of the year, and have many more games, so it is more stressful.

Alex, a coach is a coach ALL year long, ESPECIALLY in the meatgrinder NFL.

Don't take a short season for little time commitment. There is a draft to do in April (a major commitment), and then training (mini-camps) begins very soon after that.

I say Cowher is doing the right thing - WHATEVER he wants to do!

If you played the lottery day in and day out for 15 years then actually WON one day, would keep playing, even though it takes all your time, energy and effort?

Sports fans want too much. This is a man living your dream, so you can't understand why he's give it up! But to him IT'S JUST A menial non-stop, media drenched JOB! I'm sure Dude can't do anything or go anywhere without being mobbed.

He's set finacially, he hasn't spent time with his family and THAT'S exactly why he wants/needs to. (If you had kids you'd know the feeling) Football teams/players/coaches come and go, but Bill Cowher has only one life of his own to live. Kudos to him and best wishes.

No one ever lambasted John Madden for retiring so early...

Manny, I completely agree with you. He's accomplished everything he wanted to as a head coach and now he wants to spend time with his family. Why is that wrong? A long time ago I made the decision to spend time with my family instead of coaching in the NFL, thankfully I didn't recieve any criticism at the time.

Fans have not right to say what is right or wrong for any decision a coach/team/players makes in their personal life. Sorry Joebook.

If Cowher doesn't want to coach the Steelers anymore, it's his decision, not yours. Sorry Joebook.

I'm not really sure what this bolding thing is supposed to accomplish. It reminds me of a bad political add. Sorry Joebook. ;-)

Actually I'd rather Cowher stayed in Pittsburgh. There was a rumor going around that Cowher will take Romeo's job in Cleveland and I don't want that chin on the Browns' sideline.

Pretty good post dude... I am entitled to whatever opinion I want, and that's what makes the 'Chair so beautiful (sniff sniff) to be a part of. If Cowher would have listened to me, he'd still be coaching, so you are right... I don't call the shots.

Ego is a dangerous thing. Cowher's ego is huge these days. He had the perfect situation, but has pushed it aside. He will get the $$ he is seeking, but hi tenure at his next team will be average at best.

Attention Jeff Fisher! You and your longest consecutive tenure as head coach of the same team are now ON THE CLOCK!

Jeff Fisher is going nowhere. He has a young franchise QB, and an improving defense. He'll be there for at least five more years.

He just bought a mansion in North Carolina, where his daughters all go to school. This is the first year his wife and kids haven't lived in Pittsburgh during the season. I know he's loaded and set for life...if he stays married. He'd lose more money in a divorce settlement than he would if he coached the next ten years. So he's actually saving money by quitting.

Ha HA! I will always rag on Jeter. Funny thing is, I actually like him...

I just think he's pretty good, while the rest of the world thinks he's great.

I'll get a fun "challenge" up for us soon enough!!!

Now thats funny. Damn. And I wasn't born before 1919, I've been a fan since I was 7. Why? Because I grew up in a family of Red Sox fans and figured finding a better team wouldnt be hard, and because Mantle is easier to spell than Yastrzemski.
