Bill Belichick above the law?

by Kdark11

To all those Patriots fans:

Bill Belichick had the opportunity to apologize to all of the loyal Patriots fans today at his news conference and all he had to say is "this is in the past, I'm moving forward and focusing on the Chargers." I have always been a fan of the Patriots and will continue to be a fan in the future. I feel that all of the fans deserve a sincere apology from Belichick. He seems to act as if this is no big deal and likely the $500k fine is of little concern to a man who make millions each year. I am concerned! The Patriots have potentially lost their first round pick which will certainly have an impact on the organization in the years to come. I have to believe top talent will be less interested in signing a free agent deal with the Patriots as a result of this. I think most athletes want to prove they are the best with out cheating. Look at the likes of  Payton Manning and Ray Lewis who are two of the best on either side of the ball. I have no doubt in my mind that these two are simply the best based on their outstanding work ethic and preparation. I think a large majority of the players would not stand for cheating and sadly these players don't always know what is going on behind closed doors.

Be a man Bill, and apologize for your actions that have an impact on your entire team, organization and fan base.

Belichek will not apologize for what he did because he does not believe he did anything wrong. He is as smug and as arrogent as they come. Goodell proved that he has a double standard for players and management by giving this softball punishment.

Agreed. Belichek probably looks down on coaches that wouldn't "go the extra mile" for an advantage. Also, I'm not convinced that he won't cook up a new, more ocvert scheme to keep doing this.

An article discusing someone's character should never include Ray Lewis.

Last I checked, Ray was one of the best defensive players and has not cheated on the field. Also, he wasn't guilty of anything off the field other than obstruction of justice and I don't blame him. Look at the way our society convicts people before we know the facts.

What scares me is that you refuse to associate obstruction of justice in a murder case (in other words, lying to the police) with the issue of character. Lewis may have clean up his public persona but you can't tell me with any degree of certainty that he's as pure as Manning. If Lewis has turned his life around, great. But he was hiding something when he lied that night to the cops and that goes against his character in my book.

This issue is sports related not personal and I have seen no evidence related to his JOB that would prove that he is any less of character guy when it comes to his job. I would agree that in his personal life he made a mistake. The question is when do you let it go. He paid his price.

True, it happened in his personal life and not in a game. But, to say that people can separate the two lifes completely is naïve.

Apology or not apology, who cares. What I am curious about is what he meant when he said they have never videotaped defensive signs to gain a competitive advantage. What I want to know is why else would they be videotaping defensive signs? It is an honest question. I can't think of a legitimate reason one would specifically tape a defensive coach giving his teams signs except to gain a competitive advantage. The only plausible explanation is to cheat.

Well thats a perfect politician answer. You never admit to not doing it, you just admit that you didnt do it in the manor that you were caught for.

Bill Belichick didn't do anything to me. So why should he apologize to me? His job is to prepare for the Chargers right now. I would be pissed if he were spending his time apologizing to me. Apologizing won't get any draft picks back. And I seriously doubt any free agents will hesitate to come to New England because of this and only this.

And if he isn't sorry, he isn't sorry. That's his prerogative. I hate when people demand apologies for anything. An apology is meaningless unless the person is actually sorry.

He's apologized to his team, and to his boss. Those are the only people who deserve a contrite Bill Belichick. He's done nothing wrong to me.

Uh, shouldn't he apologize to The NFL and the Jets (as well as the Lions, Packers, Eagles, Steeler, Chargers and all the other teams he cheated to beat)? the last person he needs to apologize to is his own team. They won and made tons of money for it. I hardly think they care that they only accomplished it by cheating.

"they only accomplished it by cheating"

I think you might want to rephrase that, because it seems like you're saying that they won only because they cheated.

If he's sorry, hr should apologize. If he's not sorry, why give a lip service apology.

It's funny, we all bitch about these athletes (and now a coach) giving BS apologies, then when they don't apologize, we demand that they say they're sorry.

I agree. He doesn't have to be sorry. What's more, he doesn't need to act sorry if he's not.

You said the only people who deserve a contrite Bill Belicheck are his team and his boss. I disagree. I think the league are the ones who deserve a contrite Bill Belicheck.

Yeah, I'll agree with you. He did potentially damage the NFL's image with this stuff. So I'll say they deserve a contrite Belichick, but they're not going to get one.

You seem to forget that he work for the fans. No fans, No team. Why should a fan expect anything less than a contrite Belichick?

How do you figure? I work in customer service, and Belichick's job is a form of customer service. He may serve us as our coach, and I may serve customers at Gillette Stadium and BC (I can't flaunt that enough), but the customers at Gillette are not my bosses, Mr. Kraft is. And the fans of the Patriots are not Belichick's boss, Mr. Kraft is. Of course, there are a few more middle men and women between me and Bob Kraft than Belichick and Bob Kraft.

Bellicheck is a cheater, but it does no good to dwell on it. I don't agree with his actions, but he's right, it is in the past and all he wants to do is focus on the game at hand.

Damm this is so overblown, most teams do this including the JETS. Fat boy Mangini had no problem doing it when he was on the Patriots no did he. If the Jets actually played like a NFL team last Sunday this would have never been brought up. Hey I guess it is a pretty good excuse for being humiliated on opening day though.

Again, what a bunch of girls.

It's too bad you don't know anything about football. Here's a lttle education for you smartass.

NFL rules state "no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." They also say all video for coaching purposes must be shot from locations "enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."

Straight out of the NFL handbook. What does it mean? Video taping IS ALLOWED, but only in designated areas: Belichik's man was in a nondesignated area. Every other team tapes for signals and formations from the booth. That's Bill's only crime: location. Bill probably would apologize but the subtly would be lost on you mouth-breathers.
