Biggest Sports Upset Ever?

15
Vote

by Ibearg

I'm going to say that Appalachian States upset of Michigan today is not the biggest upset in team sports ever; it is the second biggest. For puposes of this discussion I'm only including team sports, so boxing, tennis, wrestling etc are out. That being said the biggest upset in modern team sports has to be the "miracle on ice" 1980 win by the US team over Russia in the Olympics. The US team was a bunch of amateurs, college students to be more precise facing a well trained well oiled group of professionals. The Russians had recently crushed the US prior to this game and for the US to find a way to pull out the victory has to be the greatest upset in team sports. The second greatest upset just happened today. The preseason #5 team in the nation, with a returning senior QB and a star running back, where beaten in one of the most imposing places to play in front of 100,000+ fans, by a 1AA team. No matter how good of a 1AA team Appalachian state may be they are still a 1AA team. Unlike the miracle on ice though this was amateurs versus amateurs, thus i give the edge to the miracle on ice.

Others that deserve consideration would be the "Miracle Mets" of 1969, the Super Bowl 3 Jets, or Villanova over Georgetown in 1985. The Mets and Jets however were professional teams playing against each other and Villanova and Georgetown were two big east schools playing against each other.

Quite a day for sports, having seen the second greatest upset of all time.

Greatest upset in college football history. You can name a lot more stunning upsets if you encompass all sports together.

ok, they lost to one of the smaller D-I schools. Still, this is the best of the best of 1-AA football. Upsets happen. This is not even close to a top 10:

In no particular order, here are at least 10 bigger upsets:

  • Miracle on Ice
  • SB III (Jets over Colts)
  • SB 36 (Pats beat the greatest show on turf)
  • Georgetown over Villanova
  • George Mason over Duke
  • Tiger's first Masters
  • 1983 NC State over Houston
  • Texas over USC
  • Diamondbacks win WS over Yankees
  • Game 5 of 2007 Eastern Conference Finals (LeBron downs the Pistons)
  • 1928 Notre Dame over Army
  • 2004 Red Sox over Yankees
  • Music City Miracle
  • Boise Sate over Oklahoma
And I'm sure I'm missing a lot of other better upsets

I already said miracle on ice was bigger. that being said every other one of those on your list i disagree with except maybe red sox over yankees which is hard to compare because it was a series versus one game. think about this for a second Appalachian state is quite literally not even in Michigan's League. To me this victory would be like if a AAA team won a series versus a playoff baseball team to knock out that team from the playoffs. You might as well consider this one a playoff game for Michigan because they will now need to win every other game if not win them convincingly just to have a chance to get to a bcs bowl game.

Question - does games against non-IA teams even matter to BCS computers? I know it will resonate with voters, but I thought these games were like "exhibitions" to the BCS... if I'm wrong, it's not the first time...

your telling me that a young, black golfer with practically no experience in one of the most racist golf clubs in the country winning the most prestigous tournament in golf isn't bigger? Your telling me a bunch of NFL journeymen, lead by a QB that was never a true starter in college, and that was a 6th round rookie beating the team of the time to win a superbowl isn't bigger? You're telling me an 11 seed knocking off the top team in the tournament isn't bigger? Your telling me that the game known for the "Win one for the gipper" speach over Army in their period of strenght isn't bigger? Your telling me that a team from Idaho beating a BCS team in a BCS Bowl isn't bigger? YOur telling me that beating thhe best team in baseball after facing a 3-0 deficit isn't bigger? You're telling me that a inferior team from an inferior league facing the best of the best and winning isn't bigger? Your telling me that Jimmy V's upset to win the NCAA Tournament over houston isn't bigger? Your telling me that essentially a one trick pony beating a team that was considered one of the best CFB teams ever isn't bigger? YOu're telling me in an era of Baseball where small markets can't compete as well against big markets, one of the lowest budget teams beating the biggest budget team in the league isn't bigger? You're telling me that when essentially shut down for most of a game that would send them home in a 4-1 series win over the best of the east, and ONE GUY erasing a deficit with no real help around him isn't a bigger upset? Is this some kind of a joke or am I just crazy?

I understand why people might consider it an upset, but I don't think it is. I'm glad AP State won. I hope this sends a message to the Bowl Subdivision teams that you should never underestimate a smaller college. I go to a Division III school (No football scholarships) and seeing AP State win is a huge feather in the cap for the smaller colleges.

size of the college has nothing to do with it, or Michigan would win every year... It's all about the program, not the student body.

You're missing my point, Manny. I'm not talking about enrollment. Michigan invests buukoo bucks into their football program. They underestimated AP State. They brought their A-game and stuck it to the Wolverines in "The Big House."

These kids don't get this type of opportunity to play D-1 schools every week. In fact, they don't play at a D-1 school.

This was a big time football school against 1-AA school. Michigan should have never lost control of that game.

I hear what you're saying, but when talking 17-22 year old kids (Yes, I am officially old now), is there REALLY that big of difference talent-wise across the board?

I took my son to a sports bar with intentions of watching the Rays-Yankees game but forgot it was a YES-dictatored game, so we ended up watching the Mich St and Mich games with 200 drunk idiots. It was fun! Every play SOMEONE was cheering raucously... my little man likes football more than I do now!

Sure Michigan has more depth, but it's Sept. 1st, if these teams played in November, after the fine tuning and fire testing of the season, after injuries to key players, nicks and bruises, grinding of the season, Michigan's depth would prevail and it wouldn't have been close.

But this was A State's Super Bowl, Olympics and World Series wrapped into one... They were FAST (that was thing that stood out to me), they came VERY prepared and nothing to lose so they wanted it BADLY! They kicked the crowd in the groin, made Mich doubt itself and they earned it and they deserved it...

Kicking the FG on first down was kinda weird with 30+ seconds left.

I had Michigan winning it all, but I LOVE these types of 'WOW!" games

I would say #1 is the oldest of them all - David v. Goliath. Come on - Anytime a little Jew beats anyone fairly in a fight, it's big news. But he beat an undefeated Philistine GIANT! And set the table for these analogies to be made...

Well, technically, GOD was on Goliath's side too... but also, it was army v. army but they decided to let the best of each army battle it out man to man...

The Philistines had an ace up their sleeve.

According to King James' finest translators a guy from Gath named Goliath, who was an uncircumcised Philistine of six cubits and a span tall (around 9 feet) was a champion who whooped the shit (my word, not theirs) out of a lot of challengers before facing up the Jews that day.

Of course, David kind of cheated the rules of the fight by using a projectile (a rock that the Lord provided unto him) and not the sword or spear he was given.

Let it be known that David didn't kill him with a stone. He only Debo'd him - (knocked him the eph out) by hitting him in the gourd where he wasn't protected by a brass helmet (it was more likely just copper or some other simple alloy since brass wasn't made until after Jesus was long gone) and his hundreds of pounds of armor (Leather and hides at best).

After he was knocked out, David beheaded Goliath with his the Philistine's own sword, even though it also states that GOD's command was to NOT use a sword at all - THAT little mess up (among others) came back to bite David in the arse...

The Philistines ran and hid like Michigan's boosters are today and the Jews lived happily ever after! Umm... well... the Bible isn't much for fairy tale endings (ever read Revelations?)

No way the first game of the season can be considered the second greatest upsets in the history of sports. I agree that Miracle on Ice was number 1. But I would put Super Bowl III, the 69 Mets, Villanova over Georgetown, and Duke over UNLV all in front of this Michigan game.

Just a question for the group -- how many of us were alive when the aforementioned upsets occurred? Miracle Mets? Nope. The Jets over the Colts? Nope. Miracle on Ice? I was one. Watched G-Town and Villanova, but was six, so my budding sports mind didn't understand it. The most painful thing about this, not being able to watch it from my couch.

Manny is actually right, non-Division 1 games don't count towards BCS points or rankings. I think this kills any chance Michigan has at a BCS game, but then again if they win out and look good doing so they can still play in the Championship game.

As a Michigan fan:

-congrats to A. St. They played a great ball-game, and man are they fast. I feel like that's a huge advantage for these smaller teams playing against complex schemes in big programs. Speed can make up for a lot of mental mistakes on the football field.

-this was a fluke. Michigan is a much better team than this, and you will see that come time to play Wisconsin or Ohio St. Don't think that this game automatically spells a loss in Big Ten games.

-Lloyd Carr should be safe. As I said, it was a fluke, and I don't think it was the fault of Carr. Hart was out for almost two quarters, and Henne played very poorly. Not coach's fault here.

-Mike Hart is an absolute stud. To run for 188 yards and 3 TD's is fantastic, especially considering he missed some game time. Too bad it went unnoticed in the losing effort. A true Heisman candidate in my (admittedly biased) book.

It depends on what context you are looking at the upset in. If you include the importance of the game then no, it is nowhere near the top. With the importance factored out it would be one of the biggest upsets ever. I think that the stage on which the upset takes place is important therefore I dont think this is as big of an upset as some others that were previously made in this topic.
