Biggest Rivalries in Sports

by Behbigben15

These are what I think are the best rivalries in U.S. sports from the past and present.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees - This rivalry has so many great moments, and bad blood. A few worth mentioning would be Boone's walk-off home run in game seven of the '03 ALCS, or when Boston game back from a three games to none deficit in the ALCS the following season, and ended up sweeping St. Louis in the world series to end their 84-year old curse. I also remember when Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez threw one of the yankee coaches (Don Zimmer) on the ground during a bench-clearing brawl. This rivalry may be the biggest in sports today.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Boston Celtics - This intense NBA rivalry all started in the 1960's, when the celtics defeated the lakers in six of the eight years they played one another for the NBA finals. L.A. featuring Jerry West, and Boston featured Larry Bird. The celtics could also be considered one of the best dynasties in the long history of sports, starting with the '58-'59 season the celtics won 8 straight NBA final championships (four of them against the lakers), and starting with the '56-'57 season the celtics had won eleven of thirtteen NBA finals. Boston has beat the lakers seven times in the NBA finals, and the lakers have beaten the celtics just twice in the NBA finals. This is the biggest NBA rivalry, and arguably the best rivalry in all sports.

Duke vs. UNC Basketball - The main reason that this is such a big rivalry is that they are both ACC teams, and are not too far apart, in fact just eight miles. But also because that these two teams are often battling for the ACC championship. These teams have been playing eachother at least twice a year since 1920, that is 86, soon to 87 years of fierce basketball, this is the biggest Division I rivalry in College Basketball history.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins - These two NFL teams have a combined 31 division titles, and 10 world championships (8 of them being Super Bowls), these two teams arguably have the most history in them, and they play eachother twice a year. This is, without a doubt, the best, and biggest rivalry in the NFL, hands down. It also holds the best classic head coach rivalry, Gibbs/Landry.

Army vs. Navy Football - This rivalry features the U.S. Naval Academies football team facing off against the U.S. Military Academies football team, the U.S. Naval Academy is in Annapolis, MD, and the U.S. Military Academy is in West Point, NY. The two teams have been facing off since 1890, the game is played every year, Navy leads the series 51-49-7. These two academies are usually pretty well matched up, and they fight hard for their academies.

Ohio State vs. Michigan Football- These two Mid-West schools have been playing eachother yearly since 1935, this Big Ten rivalry is always intense, and usually has Big Ten championship, or National Title implications. The teams have a combined nine heisman trophy winners (Michigan 3, Ohio State 6), and a combined 18 National Titles (Michigan 11, Ohio State 7). This rivalry is considered the best in Division I college football.

Other Great Rivalries:

SF Giants V.S. LA Dodgers

CHI Bears V.S. GB Packers

TOR Maple Leafs V.S. MTRL Canadiens

PHI 76ers V.S. LA Lakers

Jeff Gordon V.S. Dale Jr.

Up and Coming Rivalries:

NE Patriots V.S. IND Colts

If I missed any big ones let me know, but I think I hit most of the big ones.

I agree with most of what you said, with exception of Lakers-Celtics. Both teams are shells of their former selves, and they hardly ever play one another, so it shouldn't even count. And Pats-Colts isn't "up and coming," it's best rivalry in the NFL. I know the Bears/Pack and Cowboys/Skins have some tradition, but every time NE and Indy play one another you expect something special; you can't say that about the other two.

With rivalries it's all about tradition. New England-Indy doesn't have shit on Green Bay-Chicago.

So true. I got a friend from Chicago, and he tells me that a fan of Green Bay and a fan of the Bears cannot even sit in the same room. The Colts and Patriots is just a little era. I think once Manning and Brady retire, it's gonna be history and nobody will talk about the rivalry ever again UNLESS they're talking about the two athletes themselves or the Superbowl. Other than that, it's just a little trend that the two teams are having. One doesn't like the other cuz they are two very good teams, and only one teams can make it to the Superbowl. On the other hand, Green Bay/Chicago lasts forever. I think they're second most bitter rival to the Yankees/Red Sox...

Ok list but the title is misleading since you included some of the college rivalries. You may want to throw in Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche.

In my opinion, NE-Indy and Duke-UNC are the best rivalries in the US. If we include foreign teams as well, I'd add Barcelona-Real Madrid to the list.

Yeah, these are the best in US pro sports, but remember sports are pro outside of North America... England-Australia (The Ashes), England-Scotland, Man United-Man City, Celtic-Rangers, Villa-Birmingham City... Man United-Liverpool, Liverpool-Everton... The list goes on.

Let's not forget River Plate-Boca Juniors in Argentina. This may be the most intense rivalry of all.

Cubs-Cardinals might be an omission(though the Cubs haven't been good enough the last 100 years to make it a rivalry). I would also say that in College Football, Auburn-Alabama is a huge omission. It gets overlooked by all of us outside of the South.

Dallas and Washington...mmm... Actually, and this is generally the only time it happens, but the entire NFC east is a rivalry...every team in that division (now) hates each other passionately...every divisional matchup (now that the cards are gone) is a rivalry game...

Professional Sports has largely become so commercialized and blase during the salary cap and big money era, that there virtually are no more real rivalries. Baseball might be the exception.

The first was best because it was the closest to realistic.

Rocky coming from nowhere/washed up in I, to unbelievable champ in II to one of the Greatest of All Time in II, to ending the Cold War in IV...

Rocky I was Buster Douglas...

Rocky II and IV - Imagine if Buster Douglas was STILL Boxing and hadn't lost since...

I couldn't care less for V (Rocky goes to Police Academy), VI - (Rocky vs. Jason and Freddy) or VII - (Adrienne's Revenge)

Rocky's whining in the first movie didn't do it for me. And he lost in the end and started crying to see his girlfriend. If they switch the last 15 minutes of rocky 2 and rocky 1, then rocky 1 would be pretty good.

He was portrayed as a guy who sucked and gave it all he had and captured the love of a city and had the fight of his life (and still lost) is what makes the story GREAT. If he wins all the time, it's just another fairy tale... Great stories/movies SHOULD make you feel a little miffed. It's real!

Rocky I won 3 Oscars including the Oscar for Best Picture over Taxi Driver and All the President's Men.

No other Rocky was nominated for ANY award.

And there should have never been a III - in II he retired due to a detached retina...

Just to be clear, and I hate to be a spelling Nazi, but as a Carolina grad, I know that the correct spelling of that school in Durham is "Dook." And yes, the Carolina-Dook rivalry is awesome. Except, of course, when the game is played in that rat trap in Durham. Man, that place is a serious fire hazard. What a dump.

Aw man you guys picked some good ones. The rivalries in college sports...football and basketball in particular are those that i think stand out a little more than the rest. As much as I am a fan of the SEC to the fullest and with all do respect to Auburn-Alabama, Georgia-Florida, the two schools of Tobacco Road Duke-UNC, separated by only eight miles, is HANDS DOWN the biggest rivalry in NCAA. These schools downright HATE each other's guts

...My bad. I don't know how I'd forgot about ARMY-NAVY. I went to a game in Baltimore and let me tell you this...records don't mean shit when these two collide WHATsoever! It's strictly about who gets THAT particular win. One of them can have only one win but if that win is against the other, some consider that a salvage of a season!
