Big Ten Trouble this Bowl Season

The college football bowl games begin next week. The spread for each game reveals some very interesting information about each conference at the end of this season. You can see all the games and spreads at our bowl game projections page.
Here is a rundown of the each conference and what its record will be after the bowl season if the spreads provide the correct winner in each game.
- SEC 6-3
- ACC 5-3
- Big 12 5-3
- Mountain West 4-1
- Big East 3-2
- Pac-10 3-3
- Conference USA 2-4
- Big Ten 2-6
- WAC 1-3
- Independent 0-1
- Sun Belt 0-1
- MAC 0-3
The SEC will have the opportunity to prove it’s the best conference by showing well with its nine bowl teams. The conference went 6-3 last bowl season and is only a combined 8- point underdog in three of the games.
How is the Mountain West predicted to go 4-1? Isn’t it a “lesser” conference than the BCS conferences? The answer is the Mountain West isn’t playing up to its potential in these bowl games. Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson hasn’t found flattering bowl games for the conference. Will anyone think the Mountain West is better if Utah beats Navy, BYU defeats coachless 6-6 UCLA, or New Mexico defeats Nevada in its home stadium?
The most glaring number is the Big Ten going 2-6. The conference has something to prove this bowl season. It went 2-5 in last year’s bowl games. This bowl season might reveal Ohio State was actually the weakest top team in the country and the Big Ten shouldn’t be considered one of the top conferences in the country. A 2-6 record and Ohio State losing badly in the title game could result in the Big Ten not being invited to the BCS final showdown for a long time.
After researching, we found ourselves only really interested in three of the games this bowl season. Are there any games you plan to sit down and watch? Such disinterest in the post season could all change if we had a 16-team playoff instead. Every sports fan would be far more engaged in 15 games during a playoff than a few pointless bowl games at the end of the season.
