Big Surprise: Boras Shows Up At GM Meetings
Scott "Follow the Money" Boras is covering all his bases and is getting his ducks in a row by attending the GM meetings in Orlando. Now he can extol the virtues of his prize client Alex Rodriguez to thirty general managers in person. Boras showing up at the meeting was hardly a big surprise but it would have been a huge surprise if he didn't show up.
His goal is to hoodwink the general managers into thinking his client is actually worth $30 or more million and that he can lead their team to a 2008 World Series championship. Besides the more he can get for his client the more money he puts in his pocket. If he can get A-Rod signed for $30 million for example he could get $3 million if he is getting 10 percent for negotiating the contract but he may be getting a bigger cut than that.
Would love to hear what Boras has to say when general managers bring up the fact that A-Rod has been a no-show as far as his hitting has gone in the last three postseasons. How can Boras put a positive spin on A-Rod having 7 hits in 44 at bats in the last three postseasons while driving in only one run? Boras knows there is at least one team out there that will pay A-Rod the kind of money Boras wants to sign him and he is laying the groundwork this week in Orlando for that day.
Hot Stove Roundup
Andy Pettitte Declines $16 Million Option
Andy Pettitte declined an option of $16 million to remain with the Yankees. He now has the option of retiring or returning to the Yankees. Whether he would still receive the $16 million if he signs later is questionable. Very few players would turn down an option with this much money. According baseball-reference.com Pettitte has made $92 million through the 2007 season playing baseball so can understand why he would retire since he would only be piling money on top of money.
When compared to Alex Rodriguez who has made $170 million in 14 seasons Pettitte has made about $80 million less in 13 years. If Rodriguez gets his $350 million plus contract this winter he would end his career with $520 million which dwarfs the $92 million Pettitte has made so far. Still $92 million is more than most fans will ever see in their lifetime so can't see why Pettitte would want to return to an uncertain future in the last season of Yankee Stadium.
Pettitte may be buying time to see which Yankees stay and which Yankees leave for more money and then make his decision on whether to return to the Yankees or hang the spikes up for good. With only 201 wins he will never make the Hall of Fame since Tommy John won 288 and Bert Blyleven won 287 and still have both not been admitted to the hallowed shrine at Cooperstown.
Maddux Signs With Padres For $10 Million
Greg Maddux has signed with San Diego Padres for $10 million for the 2008 seasons. Maddux is 8th on the all time wins list with 347 wins. If he plays in 2009 and wins 27 games over the next two seasons he would move into third place in wins with 374 with only Walter Johnson with 417 wins and Cy Young with 511 wins ahead of him.
Maddux has made $143 million in his 22 seasons so he doesn't need the money but he probably would like to move up the list in wins so he can have his name up there with the greats like Young and Johnson.
