Big Papi took Roids?

In an article in Yahoo, "Big Papi" David Ortiz admitted that he may have taken steriods in his youth in the Dominican Republic. "I used to buy a protein shake in my country. I don't do that anymore because they don't have the approval for that here, so I know that, so I'm off buying things at the GNC back in the Dominican (Republic). But it can happen anytime, it can happen. I don't know. I don't know if I drank something in my youth, not knowing it," said Ortiz. The problem of performance enhancing drugs is certainly a bigger problem in countries which do not have food and drug standards as strong as that in the U.S. Furthermore many dietary supplements fall outside of the auspices of any regulation including the FDA in this country. It makes me wonder what the effects are on young people still in the developmentary stages physically. Besides obvious dangers, to what extent do these drugs increase not just immediate but future growth? If they do they provide an incentive for youngsters to inject or ingest them to speed that development especially in countries where the GDP is a fraction of that in the United States. In such places there is alarmingly little literature alaming young people of the dangers. This is very disturbing indeed.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I wish the whole 'roiders thing was never discovered. Baseball is becoming irreparable.

THis is not a big deal. He did what was legal in his country, and stopped taking it when he came to America. He's done nothing to violate any rules

That brings up an interesting point. If a player does roids in a country where it is legal during the offseason, is that ok? What if it is someone like Sosa last year when he wasn't playing and under contract?

Well that's a really interesting point. Creatine and Mark McGwire comes to mind (nevermind other possible steroid use...). Moreover, consider the fact that players may have been ingesting other similar types of products (steroid-like...creatine, you get the idea) even in the U.S. But, if anyone would like to accept the idea that if its legal in another country and you're there...a la large father in the domincan, then technically speaking, was it ok to take steroids (or similar perfectly legal supplements now banned by baseball) in 1999 or 2001 when they were allowed in general. This is an interesting predictament indeed...perhaps I should write something...finally

I think Papi meant all types of PEDs in general, not specifically roids. But if he finds himself under suspicion and suddenly loses the ability to speak english a la Sammy Sosa, then knock this comment down.

On sports radio WEEI in Boston more than one radio personality instantly said that he was doing it to not only support Bonds chase for the record but to possibly deflect criticism if he had....culture of suspicion

How many of our "so-called heroes" will fall in this latest episode of the steroid saga?
