In an article in Yahoo, "Big Papi" David Ortiz admitted that he may have taken steriods in his youth in the Dominican Republic. "I used to buy a protein shake in my country. I don't do that anymore because they don't have the approval for that here, so I know that, so I'm off buying things at the GNC back in the Dominican (Republic). But it can happen anytime, it can happen. I don't know. I don't know if I drank something in my youth, not knowing it," said Ortiz. The problem of performance enhancing drugs is certainly a bigger problem in countries which do not have food and drug standards as strong as that in the U.S. Furthermore many dietary supplements fall outside of the auspices of any regulation including the FDA in this country. It makes me wonder what the effects are on young people still in the developmentary stages physically. Besides obvious dangers, to what extent do these drugs increase not just immediate but future growth? If they do they provide an incentive for youngsters to inject or ingest them to speed that development especially in countries where the GDP is a fraction of that in the United States. In such places there is alarmingly little literature alaming young people of the dangers. This is very disturbing indeed.
