Best Team in Baseball? (June 25, 2006)

Right now, when asked who the best team in baseball is, there are many different answers one could give. The Detroit Tigers have the best record in baseball. The New York Mets have the biggest division lead and are possibly the most complete team. The Chicago White Sox are defending champs but are stuck behind the Tigers. The Boston Red Sox are hot and have won 8 in a row. The Minnesota Twins started off the season on an ugly note, but have won 13 of their last 15 games. The New York Yankees have been struggling due to injuries, but are still only 2.5 back in the division and, c’mon, they’re the Yankees. There are also the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Oakland A’s who you could make a case as the best team in baseball.

However, in my mind, one stands above the rest. The Mets, while they may not have the best record in baseball, are the most complete team and, in my opinion, that makes them the best. Led by David Wright, Carlos Delgado, and Jose Reyes, their lineup is the best in the National League, one through eight. The rotation is anchored by Tom Glavine and Pedro Martinez, two guys who should easily be all-stars come July. While they would like to have more steady production out of their closer, Billy Wagner, he’s still a great closer and should be fine down the stretch.

So, there’s my opinion. Who do you think is the best team in baseball?

I'm also going with the Mets, but if you check out my user page, you'll see my biases. Their ability to stay in games is incredible. Take yesterday -- they fall behind 6-0 against one of the best pitchers in the majors, lose their SP to a procedural rule (admittedly, a potential blessing in disguise), and for all intents and purposes had Inning Endy Chavez as their DH. Yet, they stayed competitve. No one is going to win 162 games, but the Mets don't concede that out of the gate.

The White Sox. The Mets may have the best lineup in the National League, but the Sox have the best lineup in baseball period. Also the National League is by far the weaker of the two leagues this season, just look at the records in interleague play so far. Also the Sox have 5 starters compared to the Mets Pedro and Glavine, who at their age, it cannot be a guarantee that they'll still pitch as well in the second half. The Mets have concerns with their closer, while the White Sox have absolutely none as Bobby Jenks has been lights out converting 22 of 23 saves so far. I also think that the Tigers are a more complete team. The Mets will come out of the NL, but much like a lot of the NL pennant winners lately, that's all they're gonna get.

The Red Sox. Thier offense is heating up and coming together, and the fill-in pitchers they've been using are performing admirably. They've not been as badly hurt by their injuries as most teams would have been, thanks to the genius of Theo. Everything's clicking.

Yes, my top five are Mets, Red Sox, Tigers, White Sox, Cardinals. If the Sox keep playing the way they are now and keep getting production from guys like Lester and Delcarmen, they'll be number 1 soon enough.

The best team is your current World Series Champs, Da White Sox... Look at the last month.... White Sox win two out of three against the first place Tigers not to mention the South Siders swept Tigers earlier this year (that is 5 out of 6 so far), took the series from Cleveland, Texas, and swept the Reds, Cardinals and another possible sweep today against the Astros. How do you not take the White Sox as the number one team?

A little bias there? Yes the Sox are in the top 5... but for your statement about they are 5-1 against the Tigers & swept the Cards - when they swept the Tigers earlier in the year, 1 was a 1 run game & the other was a 2 run... when they met in Chi - the 2 losses there were by 1 run... 3 of those games could have gone either way - yes the Sox did win...but it's not like they (Tigers) got blown out... as for the Cards - the Tigers are on the virge of sweeping the Cards too... when Hou comes to town, we'll see how the Tigers do against them...

They COULD have gone the other way, but the didn't go the other way. That's how you win games. The game yesterday against the Astros SHOULD have gone the other way. But it didn't. What COULD have happened isn't part of the equation. That's a ridiculous argument.

Of course I am being biased but let’s be realistic here. The White Sox have out performed the teams that I have mentioned. Sure, the games could have gone either way, but at the end of the day, it is the team that can find a way to win which leads to the team that marks up one more in the WIN column. Better yet, teams play series just to see which way games CAN go. So to make ASwaff’s argument, the Sox have beaten the Tigers 5 out of 6 times. Thus, the White Sox are the better team. GO GO White Sox!

I've said this before, but. The Mets can beat anyone in the league in one game. I don't know about 7 though. I'm going with the white sox for now...hard to say though...

I wish I could say the Cardinals considering that I am a huge Cardinals fan, but I cannot possibly pick an NL team after going 0-5 to the ChiSox and Tigers (with one more game against detroit tonight). I'm going to have to say the White Sox...any team that can make the Cardinals rotation look like 8 year olds in a peewee league is pretty close to unstoppable.

Why do people insist on having these arguments before we even hit the All-Star break. Let's talk about who the best team in baseball is in September, when we might actually have a clear picture about who'll get into the playoffs.

The amazing thing about the Mets is that Wright and Reyes - both 23 yrs old, Reyes turned 23 last week - seem to get better every week. At some point early this year, the light seemed to go on for Reyes at the plate - he's basically stopped chasing bad pitches entirely, and during his current 13 game hitting streak, is batting .561 That, and he's playing gold glove defense.

As to Wright, it's simply scary what a good hitter this kid is at his age, and how clutch (r u listening A-Rod?)

The AL is better, no doubt. But the Mets just took 2 of 3 in Toronto and are heading to Boston, so we'll know more in a few days. As a Mets fan for 34 years though, watching this team has been a joy. And the thought of Reyes and Wright on the left side of our infield for the next 10-12 years has me sleeping pretty well at night.

You might want to take a look at your life if who is playing on the left side of the Mets infield affects your sleep patterns.

Though this is baseball, everyone thought the Dallas Mavericks were a complete team and what happened to them?

Fair enough. The Mets infield doesn't actually affect my sleeping patterns. But it does lighten my mood.
