Best Computer Game Teams

by user Alex Holowczak

As an avid sports Computer Game fan, I wondered how good other people's teams were.

On NHL '06, this is my team (Detroit Red Wings), complete with overall attributes. This is the team in the third season in franchise mode.

Offense

Line 1:
L Brendan Shanahan (94)
C Pavel Datsyuk (95)
R Teemu Selanne (89)

Line 2:
L Luc Robitaille (90)
C Steve Yzerman (94)
R Jim Preston (86)

Line 3:
L Henrik Zetterberg (88)
C Marcel Goc (93)
R Ales Hemsky (89)

Line 4:
L Jiri Hudler (84)
C Kris Draper (90)
R Tomas Holmstrom (83)

Defense:

Line 1:
Nicklas Lidstrom (95)
Mathieu Schneider (95)

Line 2:
Sheldon Souray (93)
Sandis Ozolinsh (92)

Line 3:
Chris Chelios (88)
Thomas Pock (81)

Goalies:
Jocelyn Thibault (98)
Christobal Huet (89)

I have a lot of backups, who are all rookies, or second year players; ranging from about 55 to 75 in rating.

N.B. Some of the players on the list above were rookies, so you may not recognise their names.

What are other people's teams like? I reckon mine is pretty darn good, and would be a good all-star team, let alone franchise.

On High Heat MLB 2003, I did a fantasy draft. It doesn't have franchise mode, so this is the first season. My lineup (no ratings on game):

  1. Reggie Sanders (RF)
  2. Ricky Sands (2B)
  3. Gary Sheffield (DH)
  4. Mike Piazza (C)
  5. Richie Sexson (1B)
  6. Jose Hernandez (SS)
  7. Ruben Sierra (LF)
  8. Russ Branyan (3B)
  9. Tom Staley (CF)

My reserves are ok, all average about .200 off about 15 at bats each, one is a good baserunner (has over 10 SB).

By bullpen:
S Mark Mulder
S Mike Matthews
S Ramiro Mendoza
S Karl Yamaha
S Chris George
R Jeff Nelson
R Felix Rodriguez
R Mike Stanton
R Arthur Rhodes
R Sean Lowe
R Nick Neugebaur (can't remember spelling)
C Mariano Rivera

In general, my batting is brilliant, but other than Mulder and Matthews, my starters are a bit dodgy. Also Lowe and Neugebaur are quite awful. I'm in May, and Rivera is currently 0-0, 0.70 ERA, with 8 saves. My best batter is Sexson, who is averaging over .400, and has 10 HRs, and 31 RBIs. Sheffield has had about 20 walks though. Although I am top of the AL East (with NYY), the whole division is weak, I am two games clear with a losing record! (15-16) Sanders, Staley and Sands have already stolen over 20 bases each.

So, there you have it. Does anyone have better teams? I would put my Madden NFL 2005 team here, but I can't remember it all. Also, I've gone through 10 years with it, and I only have one player that started the game left in my team (Ryan Longwell at 39).

Some of these players (notably the red ones) are rookies that either went on to be useless and no-one heard of them, or were just flat out poor. He's actually decent for me, he has hit 8 HRs so far (I think). A liabilty in the field, is true, but can't complain about his hitting.

You know what's cool about HH2k3? It has advanced stats like RC27 and EqA -- so you tell me, how well is your lineup is producing?

I can't remember off the top of my head, but all the averages are surprisingly high, nearly .300 in most cases (on MVP). The top 8 all have 7 or more HRs, apart from Sands who averages .350 or around that. Staley has a similar average. The biggest problem is Sheffield, he has this stance where he wiggles and moves - it makes you swing at EVERY pitch, no matter where it is. That's fine, but you're often so early, if a guy pitches a changeup you look mighty foolish. The problem is my bullpen. All but five pitchers have ERA's less than 6. Mendoza got under 10 in his last start (he still conceded 5 in 4.2 innings) The stats are brilliant, I'm at the top of the batting in most, but again, the pitching is poor. Perhaps it's just my pitching... The pitching controls are bad, as for some reason, even the most enduring pitcher lasts 70 pitches tops. If you throw a strike, you can hit the pitcher. If a lefty pitches a curve to a righty (v.v.), bye bye bally. Good game, fielding controls are brilliant. Just wish it had a franchise mode. As a budding mathematician, I love the stats too.

Yeah, the batting interface in that game is cool, but the pitching controls are screwed up. Sometimes you press to throw a "ball" and it goes right over the heart of the plate and gets crushed...
