Best Baseball Team Ever?

11
Vote

by user Alanschech

The age old debate, which team is the best to ever take the field? If teams from any era could play against each other, who would win? Would it be the 1927 New York Yankees? How about one of the Big Red Machine teams? How about another? I am personally a fan of the 1975 Reds, but that is because I hate the Yankees. Murders Row in 1927, if being honest, is about is good as you can get for a lineup. Historians, I want to hear from you in this debate.....

The discussion begins and ends with the '27 Yankees. But if you really want to get a debate going you should at least give your opinion.

But when you don't state your opinion you're not going to create much discussion. With a two line post like that there's not going to be much in the commenting section.

Agreed. It might be a good idea to edit your post and perhaps offer up some suggestions of your own.

This is impossible. baseball has some many different eras its hard. I could probably name 10 teams that you could completely agree with and 10 you wouldn't but could understand. I go with the '31 Philadelphia As personally, but of the current Era, the '98 yankees were very good. '27 Yanks are hard to beat. '70 Os or '75 reds deserve mention

Unfortunately you are right, 98 Yankees were also a good team. I hate the Yankees so giving them a vote is difficult for me. I want to vote for the 86 Mets, because that is my team, but that group should have dominated the World Series, it should never have been up to Buckner.

The 1975 Reds get my vote. That lineup was SICK! Joe Morgan (HOF), Pete Rose (should be HOF), Johnny Bench (HOF), Tony Perez (HOF), George Foster (only guy to hit 50 HR during the 70s), Davey Concepcion (borderline HOF consideration - great glove), Ken Griffey Sr. (good stock, got better when sent out to "stud"), Ceasr Geronimo (one of the best baseball names ever!). That team was great.

Question was best team to take the field. The '87 team was a lot different than the '86 team. That's like saying the Marlins '97 team or '03 team was bad because they had fire-sales right after...

The 1998 New York Yankees get my vote as one of the best teams ever. They had everything; pitching, power and defense.

It's virtually impossible to honestly compare this. You have to take into account, rule canges, the dead ball era, and steroids, hence the live ball era. And other thing many teams like the '27 Yankees won it when there were 12 teams in Major League Baseball so they might not have won if there we 20.

Plus if you want to go bases upons wins, it would end up beign the '01 Mariners. So there just too much too hoeslty compare this. Even though I'm a Met fan if I had to honestly as a baseball fan choose one team...the '27 Yankees, not undisputed, but you can't any better than Ruth and Gehrig hacing career years.

Just a thought: where are the '55 Dodgers in all of this? Duke Snider, Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella, and the Boys of Summer get no love?

I'd take the 1936 Pittsburgh Crawfords over ANY team, including the '27 Yankees. The Crawfords produced SIX Hall of Fame members; Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, Satchell Paige, Judy Johnson.

Oops, forgot Oscar Charleston and Smokey Jow Williams. The 1936 Crawfords were loaded. Gibson has been credited with 800 career HR's, including an alleged 84 in one year. Paige was and is still one of the best pitchers ever as was Williams. Many historians consider Johnson the best 3B ever, and Bell & Charleston were wonderful fielders and hitters.

Here's a rundown on these guys... Gibson 350+ lifetime avg, maybe as high as .384 Charleston .353 lifetime avg Bell perhaps the fastest player EVER Johnson .344 lifetime avg

Paige & Williams are the best African-American pitchers ever and both are top 20 all-time

Gibson also hit almost 1000 homeruns in his career as a catcher (973)
