The best baseball book ever written in, my estimation, is the book We Played the Game which is a compilation of players who played from 1947-1964 telling in their own words what it was like to play baseball in that era. It includes stories about a player who signed for a $3000 bonus only to find out later another team was going to sign him for $50,000. You can use the search inside feature to get examples of what the page is like. For example I clicked on excerpt and found out that Johnny Sain was the first pitcher to pitch to Jackie Robinson.
Danny Peary is the author and the foreword is by Lawrence Ritter who wrote the predecessor to this book which was about players from the early years of baseball and called The Glory of Their Times. After reading We Played the Game readers will better understand the era these players played in and how they haggled over a couple of thousand dollars raise with shady general managers who would search for reasons not to give raises.
The book can be found used at amazon.com for as little as $3.75 and new for as little as $4.00. This book lets you delve into the minds of the players back then and how their life was both on and off the field. This book will take a long time to read but it will be worth the time to realize what players from 1947-1964 encountered in their time in baseball.
I am in no way connected with amazon.com and am only mentioning this book because I enjoyed it so much.
