Bengals have a chance to have a respectable season and...

...since I now have weekends completely off, I gave some thought to driving up to San Francisco to see their game today. Since it isn't even on television!
The Bengals won me over as a fan in 1981 when they came out with the tiger-striped helmets and uniforms. Most people laughed at them but I thought they looked pretty neat. Until then, their uniforms looked too much like the Cleveland Browns'. They came out of nowhere that year to stormtroop through the AFC and played the Championship in some of the most outrageous conditions for a sporting event in history: ten degrees below zero and fifty below in wind chill. Chris Collinsworth is probably still thawing out from that one! They lost to the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
The other glory moment for the Bengals happened in 1988 when Boomer Esiason led them to the Super Bowl again, to lose to the 49ers, again.
This year's Bengal team has too many thugs and weirdoes on it. For a stiff, conservative city like Cincinnati, it is ironic that their football team is so bizarre.
