Bengals Week 2 recap

by Mojokong

Cleveland Browns 51, Cincinnati Bengals 45.

The Cincinnati Bengals are like those dum-dum lollipops with the question marks on the wrapper, you don’t know what flavor you’re gonna get. Sometimes you get the six turnovers and shaky offense flavor. Then, other times you get the best offense with no defense at all taste. Imagine the repercussions the Bengals have on Las Vegas. Jimmy the Greek would have gone mad trying to forecast this conundrum of a football team.

No point of discussing the offense this week. They looked like what we expect from them every week: efficient. It should be noted that Glenn Holt contributed nicely as a third receiver and as a kick-returner.

Marvin says he won't explain to the world what happened on defense. No need to, Marv, it looked pretty obvious to us. What I saw was a defense running around out there lost. I saw 11 guys who each decided to run their own play. When a corner is playing zone and the safety on that side blitzes, Braylon Edwards happens. When linebackers play zone with they’re backs turned, Kellen Winslow happens. When the entire team runs to one gap during a run, Jamal Lewis happens. It’s pretty fundamental. When a defense doesn’t understand how to play it, you give up fifty points to last week’s worst team in football.

I can’t help but shoulder most of the blame on the coaches. They would tell me that they can’t go out there and play for the players but that wasn’t the issue yesterday. While there definitely were some missed tackles yesterday, the main problems were formation breakdowns and lack of clear communication throughout the entire unit. Blitzes came from areas where blockers waited to pick them up. The secondary seemed to bunch together around the sideline, allowing the middle to be open every time. I realize Caleb Miller and Leon Hall were in there as replacement starters and most of the big plays could be tagged on those two, but the coaches need to adjust better for their inadequacies. Did they not watch the tape of Cleveland last week? Pittsburgh blitzed them for four quarters up the middle creating turnovers and chaos for young Derek Anderson. The Bengals blitzed from the outside and became immediately neutralized by tight ends and full backs. Sure, Pittsburgh has the greatest defensive mind in the history of football in Dick Lebeau and they play a 3-4 set, but the vulnerabilities were exposed and we didn’t jump on them.

Marvin has already gone through one defensive coordinator in his short tenure here in Cincinnati. Bresnahan has to be nearing the axe after a showing like that.

Now for special teams. Darren Simmons has more starters than most teams playing special teams due to injuries. So, in theory, they should be able to tackle better, but that’s not the case. When the Bengals used to be miserable, special teams lost us five or so games a year. Giving the opposition laughable field position regularly is an easy way to rack up avoidable losses. The great Cowboys teams of the 90's prided themselves on their starters making their special teams great. We, on the other hand, run into blockers and pave running lanes for quick returners to zoom through.

Consistency on this team has proven to be a far-fetched ambition. Our talent is too obviously lopsided on offense and it has killed us for five years now. It is still early and we don’t have to freak out just yet, but the mystery flavors better start tasting better than that. Gross!

Mojokong - disgusted.

Aren't fans supposed to be pissed when their team losses a bad game? Like we as Bengal fans say, "Well, we were bad for so long it kinda feels nice to lose in embarrassing fashion again."

No they should be pissed, especially for the way that game went down and who they lost to. God knows Im pissed everytime the Cowboys lose. But what I heard more than anything from cinci fans who were in Cleveland was "oh Browns fans are so arrogant" "They wont win another one" "They just got lucky why they gotta be so cocky about it"

It was just a lot of loser talk. And mind you Id make the same comments about anyone who is a fan of anyteam who talked like that after the game.

The Browns outplayed the Bengals simple as that. Lewis went for 200 yrds and Anderson looked like an MVP. If you dont like it get Delta O'Neal and company to cover some one.

Considering Romeo has only beat 2 North division foes in his career, it is not too big of a stretch to say, they won't win another one.

I don't know what to say. This is what happens when you cut your 2 most productive defensive players in the offseason, pass on free agents, and hope that your draftees will fill the void. It is a combination of the talent level on our D and the coaching...we made no defensive adjustments late in the game.

The Bengals have been facing these problems for the past few years. They are great at creating turnovers, but they gamble to get those picks. When they dont get those picks the Wideouts go yard, and thats what happened onSunday

At least they are going in the right direction. But they forgot to add solid defensive players for, like, eight years in a row now. But hey, maybe next year.

Are they really going in the right direction though? Marvin Lewis has led them to 1 winning season 2 seasons at .500 and only 1 playoff appearence, and they seem to be regressing back to their old ways quickly.

I agree. I was being sarcastic. I think the Bungles are the most overrated team in the league for several years now. They made the playoffs once and now they think they are perenial super bowl contenders.

Why do we keep expecting so much from them? Outside of 2005, they haven't finished above .500 since 1988. Can we admit to ourselves that 2005 was an anomaly, not some new, improved team?

Thats exactly what I said. They really have not done a lot. They got lucky in 05 with some big breaks and feasted on a horrid NFC East racking up wins over Dallas, Washington and NY I believe. Its easy to become enamored with the Bengals because they are flashy. CJ will be in the headlines everyweek with his celebrations and Palmer does have a cannon for an arm. They put up pts and look good doing it, thats what people want to see. But if you look at the team as a whole, there are plenty of flaws, and they are starting to outweigh a high powered offense.

Not to mention that we had one of the hardest schedules in the NFL last year and still went 8-8. We will roll against the Seahawks week 3.

It was one of the really great games to watch yesterday. Lots of scoring lots of action and what a great ending. If you came into it late looked a lot like one of the old time games lots of scoring and a little defense. Wait and see on next weeks games, if Cleveland comes back with a lot of points then maybe they are for real. Same goes for some of the others it is only the third game of the year and some teams look like they have been playing half the season and others still looks like exhibition time. Ind didn't look like a superbowl champion yesterday and San Diego looked like a sandball team of a bunch of guys getting together on a Sunday afternoon to play so sandlot football because that is what they looked like out there.

Neither of those teams can bounce back with those type of numbers. They were obsurdly large. I cannot imagine another team give up 51 pts

That was Cleveland's first 50 point output since 1988. I don't expect them to run into a team who is as ridiculously allergic to playing defense as the Bengals. Odds are they get offensively stifled the next three weeks...(@Oakland, vs. Baltimore, @ New England.)

In fairness, the Bengals have had a top-10 offense for 3 or 4 years. The reason why we Bengal fans keep believing they can be a contender is because we know if they can get just an average defense, they can win. Since Lewis came to town, they've ranked 28,22,28,31... and they're 30th so far this year.
