Beckham is still miles better than Shaun Wright-Phillips

Following England's 3-0 victories over Israel and Russia, a lot of talk has emerged about who is England's best side. With the emergence of Gareth Barry in midfield and the inclusion of Shaun Wright-Phillips on the right, it has been brought to the forefront whether players who were unavailable due to injury, most notably David Beckham and Frank Lampard have lost their spots.

Well, first of all, Lampard lost his spot earlier this summer when he was 'injured' prior to the Andorra match. I'm not saying he's past his prime by any means, but he requires a side that focuses around him in the midfield and as long as Gerrard is there, he's going to play second fiddle in that regard. How many teams in the world would want a player of Lampard's pedigree on the bench just in case? I'd say pretty much all of them.

As for Beckham, whomever says that Wright-Phillips has taken his spot, you're an idiot. SWP is about on the same level as his headless chicken brethren, Aaron Lennon. He turned over the ball way too much and most of the time when he got the ball down low, the possession turned out to be waste or he failed to get the cross over the Russian defender marking him. Beckham is a much more intelligent player than SWP or Lennon.

The pairing of Barry and Gerrard works because neither have an ego bigger than their brain a la Lampard. At times, Gerrard is content to lay back and allow Barry to push forward and be the man at the top of the attacking pyramid. He may not be England's second best central midfielder next to Gerrard, but most importantly, their partnership works. The ability to work together well as a team will always beat out a group of individuals playing as such no matter the discrepancy in talent.

England's best side is the one we just played. So stick with it. Beckham, Crouch and Lampard are great on the bench, as is Hargreaves, Carrick etc. The team that played the other night was perfect, so that is our best sider.

Alex, I'd replace SWP with Beckham and when Rooney gets back, put him in place of Heskey. Also, Scott Carson is better than Paul Robinson, anyone has watched Tottenham and Aston Villa this season should realize that.

Oh no... I wouldn't. Heskey and Owen work well together. Keep them in. Rooney should earn his way back into the side on merit. Same for everyone else. Beckham's England future is as an England substitute. He would be brilliant to have on the bench, playing for the last 20 minutes.

I think might be losing the plot a bit FG. SWP is getting better. If he gets more time at Chelsea, you will see his form improve more. Beckham is so one dimensional it's not even funny. England doesn't neek his free kicks; gerrard, J Cole and Rooney when he's fit, can all bend in a mean FK. We don't need his creativity in midfield--he has none. And we don't little Vickie either. SWP is the future and Beckham is very much the past.

Jgiuffra, I think Beckham is more than one-dimensional. He, unlike SWP, has to be respected where ever he is on the pitch for his passing ability alone. I saw nothing from SWP that made me think anyone fears anything he can do. His goal was due to Joe Cole's passing ability and vision more than anything. Wright-Phillips is getting better, but Beckham is a smart player, something no one would ever confuse SWP with. Honestly, I think Jermaine Pennant would be the best fit, but people are always going to be biased towards him for his off the field problems in the past. I watch a lot of Liverpool football, every game, in fact, and I know how much trouble JP causes defenses. In the Champions League final he was one of the best players on the pitch and made Massimo Oddo, not a bad player himself, look foolish at times.

I agree with Fools, he's not a one dimensional player. He's a two dimensional. He crosses a ball, and bends a FK, that's it.

One cannot compare SWP to Beckham in any way. Phillips is certainly doing well in Chelsea and is improving but has a long way to go till he reaches that standard. Same goes with Heskey and Rooney. Heskey is getting old and Rooney is young and energetic.

The thing about SWP at Chelsea is he gets a lot more freedom to roam. With England, if he did that, he'd be running into Owen and Gerrard too much. England needs a true right winger not an attacking midfielder playing on the right.

I agree that JP did play well for the first half and part of the second of the CL final. I think he may very well be able to take the the position from SWP. But you can't honestly believe that England are a better team with Becks. Let me say I am a big fan of United and have seen Beckham play very well for us. He has tons of medals from his time in Manchester. But those days are far behind him. He doesn't stretch the defense anymore. He is more likely to wander into the middle of the pitch than to make a run to the by-line. In a 4-4-2 it is crucial that wingers create width. Sadly, Beckham is unwilling or unable to do so any more IMO.
