Beckham, already a disappointment!

by Sporty Giuffra

Surrounded by flashing lights, flying confetti, and screaming fans David Beckham shocked American soccer fans everywhere when he announced his long awaited debut for the L.A. Galaxy isn’t happening. A lingering ankle injury will probably prevent Beckham from playing Saturday against Chelsea, sending ESPN into panic mode and American soccer fans into disappointment mode.

But know this American soccer fans: You were going to be disappointed with David Beckham anyway.

Since his stealer career at Manchester United ended in 2002, Beckham’s career has been in a downward spiral. In four seasons with Real Madrid Beckham scored 15 goals. In his final season at Manchester United, he scored 11 goals.

At 32, Beckham no longer possesses the speed to run by defenders and never had the moves to evade them. His best attribute, his passing, is still there, but without the ability to get into free space it’s hard to utilize it.

Beckham was playing so poorly in his final game with Real Madrid that he had to be replaced. Down by one goal, and with the Spanish League Title on the line, Beckham was substituted for Jose Antonio Reyes. Two minutes later, Reyes scored the tying goal and went on to secure the game and the title with another goal in the 83 rd minute.

Despite this, ESPN has been promoting Beckham like he’s the greatest player in the world. He had several different commercials aired during last night’s MLS All-Star 2-0 victory over Celtic, but Beckham burned ESPN and the American soccer fan when he announced his ankle is not ready for play.

“At the moment it doesn't look good that I'm going to play because the swelling is still there," Beckham said. “I’m here for five years. I’m not here obviously for the game on Saturday.”

Don’t tell ESPN that. They had a Beckham debut countdown clock above the bottom line, 46 hours before the game. And can you imagine Beckham playing at 37? It will be as sad as watching Julio Franco try to hit a fastball.

The fact is soccer is only going to be popular among soccer fans and players. Pele’ couldn’t make it main stream in America and neither will an aging, slow, on his last legs David Beckham.

That article is idiotic drivel.

1. The only reason that Real Madrid was in a position to win the title was because of Beckham's run of form down the stretch. Real Madrid are kicking themselves that they let Beckham leave, but they can't be bothered to even make a decent offer for Reyes. He also went off injured in the final game, not ineffectiveness.

2. His best attribute is his right foot, "passing" is a bit of a generic term. He does two things better than pretty much anyone else in the world. One, he is great at set pieces, and two he is extremely accurate at lobbing crosses into the box. Neither of these is dependent upon "free space" whatever that means. He never was particularly fast and that isn't part of his game so why would that be relevant?

3. No one at ESPN has claimed that he is the best player in the world. Not one analyst. Not one commercial. Not even Lalas claimed that. He is not the best player in the world, but he is the biggest star in world soccer. He has the most news coverage, he has the most endorsements, and even in commercials in Europe with Ronaldinho etc. Beckham is featured most prominently.

4. He is going to miss a friendly match. No one is claiming that is the end of the world except you. What are you ripping him for exactly? Getting hurt playing for England? Being honest? Not risking his health for the rest of the season for the sake of an ESPN commercial?

5. I am glad that you were able to look up Beckham's stats on wikipedia. Why don't you check up on how many goals he created. Since he is a midfielder who isn't necessarily a goal scorer, that might be a relevant statistic. Perhaps also he saw the ball a lot more at Man U when his fellow infielders were not Zidane and Figo.

6. There is enough space in the American marketplace for everyone. You can write a xenophobic article like this and get a bunch of sycophants who don't like soccer to agree with you, but what does that really prove? Why don't you stick to writing about things you actually have some knowledge about?

Look, Of course Beckham ain't the greatest player in the world. But ESPN is virtually out of ideas, so they treat him as if he's a legend, not the best in the world though.

He does two things better than pretty much anyone else in the world. One, he is great at set pieces, and two he is extremely accurate at lobbing crosses into the box.

WHAT?! I know he's good, but gosh, you have Ronaldinho and Cristiano Ronaldo who are better than he.

He never was particularly fast and that isn't part of his game so why would that be relevant?

Uhh, if that were irrelevant, wouldn't the Maradona's of the world not be legends?

You can write a xenophobic article like this and get a bunch of sycophants who don't like soccer to agree with you, but what does that really prove? Why don't you stick to writing about things you actually have some knowledge about?

What is xenophobic about it? He's right, no matter how big a star you are (Beckham), or how well you can play (Pele), it will wear off in the US. Unless the NFL, NBA, and the MLB all collapse of course.

I am very impressed with Ty’s ability to use big words and point out a few exaggerations I made in my piece, nice job. But I stand by the fact that Beckham will, and in some ways already is, a bust. What I’m ripping Beckham for is the fact that he’s a washed up soccer player who was just looking for one more pay day and got it in the form of a struggling league with fewer fans than the WNBA. And ESPN is pushing him, and their coverage of him, like he is the best in the world. While no one said he’s the best they infer it. As for Real Madrid, no mater how many goals he created he was still a bust for them. One Title in four years, that’s terrible. Just because Ty has a hard on for soccer doesn’t mean he’s right and just because he uses big words doesn’t mean he’s smart.

1. I said "pretty much" to leave it open to debate that he was the best at free kicks and crosses into the box. One could maybe make the argument that Ronaldinho is better at them, but that is like picking apples and oranges. Cristiano Ronaldo is not better than Beckham at set pieces, and despite his flair his crosses and decision can still be erratic. In those two areas, I think it can be argued he is the best player in the world, but I left it open to debate.

I didn't say that speed was irrelevant to the game. I said that it was relevant to the type of game he plays. He never relied on his speed, so the fact that he is not fast does not really indicate that he has declined. Similarly, Tom Brady doesn't rely on his speed (which isn't much) so it is not important to his game, though speed is important in football.

It is xenophobic to dismiss something foreign and that one knows little about with no rational reasoning behind it. If you want to make a compelling argument for why soccer won't be successful, that is fine. But just saying it won't and that American's don't like it A. simplifies the definition of Americans tremendously and B. is just circular logic.

Also, the washed-up argument is just re-spewing out misinformation. He was a key player for perhaps the biggest club in the world and just got re-called to the England squad. He was not bought by Real Madrid to win them titles, but primarily to enhance their brand. They made 300m GBP off his merchandising revenue while he was there, so I think that that was pretty successful. He was also a fan favorite at Real Madrid because he was seen as hard-working, humble, a consummate professional, and in many ways an antidote to the problems that plagued the club. Don't just spout off something you heard on ESPN and take it as fact.

We've tried saying that Americans will like soccer for 70 years, you think it'll make a difference? I agree he was a key player, because if he didn't get subbed off to Reyes, Real lose the title. the only reason why he got recalled to the England squad is A.) Steve McLaren knows monkey balls about soccer, and B.) So that his marketability doesn't drop. How can you make a statement saying that Beckham is the best in the world? That is utterly subjective.

I think that when you want to speak about David Beckham and the argument of whether or not he is all washed up, it is important to remember the quality midfield he played in at United and to ask the question of if he was ever more than role player and if he ever was or will be a talisman for anything other than the way he looks?

Take the 99 treble winning team--arguably when beckham was at his best following his return to form after the world cup red card against Argentina--there were people calling for his head and he responded. Thankfully, he had Scholes, Keano and Giggs all playing in the same midfield and a few world class strikers to pass to--Yorke, Cole, Solskjaer and an aging but still spritely Teddy Sheringham. I don't think it would be a stretch to say that he was one of the least sought after players in that starting 11. It was after that win and the goal aginst greece at Old Trafford to guarantee England's place at the 2002 world cup that Beckham began to feel he was more important than his club. It was not long after that Fergie got so annoyed with him--well we all know what happened, did the boot slip or was it thrown--he sold him for a paltry £25 million. And you are exactly right, on Real's far east tour that year they sold enough Beckham merchandise to pay his transfer fee 4 times over. Personally, I don't think United should have let him go that cheap, I would have made Real pay through the nose just beacause of the marketing possibilities. But the fact is United wanted rid because he was too big for his boots. I will qualify my seemingly harsh treatment of Beckham by saying, I saw him play brilliantly at Old trafford on a few occasions. Not least when he came in and scored two goals against Madrid at Old trafford for a win on the night albeit a loss on aggregate--no one could stop Ronaldo from getting his hat-trick and breaking united fan's hearts. note on United: Ronaldo did receive a standing ovation from the united faithful after his clinical display of his goal scoring prowess. I don't think any will argue with the fact that Beckham was at his peak when he was in Manchester. But even with his contributions, great as some of them were, I don't think he is the player to try to bring vitality to a struggling team--unless they are tring to sell calendars.

I have one further thing to say about Beckham, and in particular his work rate. He works hard but at the wrong thing. I'm thinking of his performance at the last world cup. I think we are all forgetting just how bad he was. He ran aroung like a chicken with his head cut-off. He realised it when he feigned injury in the game against Portugal to try and give his team a fighting chance. How goo d was Aaron Lennon when he came on to replace him. He doubled his value. The fact is, he is a one dimentional winger who keeps convincing unwitting coaches that he belongs in the centre of the park. He hasn't taken a defender on in about 10 years. He never tries to take on a left back in a race to the by-line. I don't know, but I have a feeling that if Becks had a face Knobby Stiles none of us would be having this conversation.

With regard to Football in America, everyone knows that the idea of a really exciting 1 all draw will never whet the appetitie of the average american, god forbid it's nil nil. The fact is that in America people--like me--are brought up on high scoring games. The only exception to that was baseball, but with the steroids and all, 20-17 is not that unusual of a scorline.

I wish that America supported it's national soccer team more. I am sad because until some of the top tier American athletes decide that soccer is the universal sport for them to showcase their talents we will never see the good ole US hold that most glorious of trophies, the world cup.

I agree with you, for perhaps the first time, SSReporters that McClaren knows absolutely nothing about football. But, it was his choice to drop Beckham in the first place. Only because his job was on the line and he was under immense pressure, did he call Beckham back. He set up goals in both matches and got them two needed results. Again, take a deep breath and read what I wrote, I did not make any statement saying that Beckham was the best player in the world. I specifically said that he was not. What I said was that he is a gifted technical player and one could argue that he is the best or close to the best player for taking set pieces and lofting crosses into the box. I don't think that that is a controversial statement, and even the most ardent Beckham-hater would admit that. If you have an argument against that refuting his technical ability, I would love to hear it. But to use philosophical arguments about how one can never objectively claim anyone as "the best" is ducking the question and stupid.

1. The best way to avoid typos when writing out Manchester United is to abbreviate it properly to Manure, or you can take the dyslexic approach of the joke name Man United SC (Soccer Club), and simply call them S.C.U.M.

2. I'd bend Keira Knightley

3. Beckham's best ability was setting up other players, but apart from that I've always seen his other abilities as slightly above average. But that was in his prime, but it was also in two very good leagues. MLS is a joke league (the Beckham fiasco proves it) and who knows how he'll do. Honestly, though, I think non-soccer fans will be unimpressed by crosses and free kicks. Beckham himself is not an exciting player. Beckham with two good scorers in front of him is exciting.

4. The news that ESPN is shamelessly promoting something is an absolute shocker to me. I'm sure it must be a mistake, and I'm going to drive to Bristol, CT to tell them about it so they can reverse it immediately.

5. Jose Antoniooooooooo, Jose Antoniooooooooo, Jose Antontiooooooooooooo, Jose Antoniooooooooooo. I hate Real Madrid, but I still have Jose's song stuck in my head from his Arsenal days.

lbearg, the MLS is a joke league because the only way they can possibly attract more fans is if they get a 30 something soccer player way past his prime! The EPL is doing fine without Beckham. La Liga is doing fine without him. It's a shame that the MLS needs David Beckham to boost ticket sales, not the fact that their team is winning.

Does anyone else find it really annoying that Ty always bullets out his points like this is some sort of presentation? This guys power point on my article is really stupid. Let me count the ways. A) Who cares if David Beckham is good at free kicks? Is that going to attract Americans into watching soccer, NO. B) How can you compare Tom Brady and David Beckham? Brady does a three or five step drop 90 percent of the time. Beckham, as all soccer players, runs up and down the field the entire game. The longest sprint Brady recently made was into the arms of Gisele Bundchen (Great Decision!). C) Keep using the word xenophobic, you’re really impressing me. D) How can you say he was a key player on Real Madrid when he played in half of their games this season? And of course Madrid bought him to help them win a title. The fact that he sells jerseys and tickets is an afterthought for these clubs. They care about winning first and foremost. Now Ty do you see how stupid it is bullet your information. It really doesn’t do anything to help your argument so PLEASE stop A) Now or B) Now.

You are right. Using paragraphs to distinguish your point when making an argument is a ridiculous concept. I should surely be put to task for attempting to articulate myself clearly. Thank you.

If you actually took the time to read what I wrote before feverishly typing, you would have realized that I was not comparing Tom Brady and David Beckham. I was making an analogy.

Also, xenophobe is not a big word. It is three syllables. When I used it, I could not use a smaller word because it is an exact term, there isn't a simpler synonym for it. In the future, I will make sure to use only monosyllabic terms so you can understand me.

Also, Beckham did miss a number of games for Real Madrid. He was dropped from the squad in the first half of the season. However, he was brought back into the starting lineup in the second half of the season, and I am sure that it was a 100% coincidence that that was when Real Madrid really started to play well and fought their way back. He also missed some time in March with a knee injury. But thanks again for looking up his stats on wikipedia and enlightening us with your obviously astute analysis of Real Madrid. Yeah, you're right. Making hundreds of millions of dollars is an afterthought for European football clubs. I am entirely cynical for believing that that might have been a big deal.
