Beckham, already a disappointment!

Surrounded by flashing lights, flying confetti, and screaming fans David Beckham shocked American soccer fans everywhere when he announced his long awaited debut for the L.A. Galaxy isn’t happening. A lingering ankle injury will probably prevent Beckham from playing Saturday against Chelsea, sending ESPN into panic mode and American soccer fans into disappointment mode.
But know this American soccer fans: You were going to be disappointed with David Beckham anyway.
Since his stealer career at Manchester United ended in 2002, Beckham’s career has been in a downward spiral. In four seasons with Real Madrid Beckham scored 15 goals. In his final season at Manchester United, he scored 11 goals.
At 32, Beckham no longer possesses the speed to run by defenders and never had the moves to evade them. His best attribute, his passing, is still there, but without the ability to get into free space it’s hard to utilize it.
Beckham was playing so poorly in his final game with Real Madrid that he had to be replaced. Down by one goal, and with the Spanish League Title on the line, Beckham was substituted for Jose Antonio Reyes. Two minutes later, Reyes scored the tying goal and went on to secure the game and the title with another goal in the 83 rd minute.
Despite this, ESPN has been promoting Beckham like he’s the greatest player in the world. He had several different commercials aired during last night’s MLS All-Star 2-0 victory over Celtic, but Beckham burned ESPN and the American soccer fan when he announced his ankle is not ready for play.
“At the moment it doesn't look good that I'm going to play because the swelling is still there," Beckham said. “I’m here for five years. I’m not here obviously for the game on Saturday.”
Don’t tell ESPN that. They had a Beckham debut countdown clock above the bottom line, 46 hours before the game. And can you imagine Beckham playing at 37? It will be as sad as watching Julio Franco try to hit a fastball.
The fact is soccer is only going to be popular among soccer fans and players. Pele’ couldn’t make it main stream in America and neither will an aging, slow, on his last legs David Beckham.
