Baseball Notebook: Balco Bonds Doctor Could Testify

Barry "Balco" Bonds may have even more to worry about if he goes to trial for perjury. Dr. Arthur Ting was present when Bonds tested positive and who could be a damaging witness if called to testify may be forced to testify by the federal government.
Ting would not testify willingly since he is still Bonds' doctor. There is plenty of circumstantial evidence against Bonds like him weighing 180 pounds as a rookie but now is 228 pounds. Very few baseball players if any have gained 48 pounds like Bonds has to my knowledge. His jersey went from a size 42 to a size 52. His shoe size increased from size 10 1/2 to size 13 which is not normal in the least. I have been wearing size 10 shoes for the last 30 years so can't understand how his shoe size could increase that much. His cap size increased from 7 1/8 to 7 1/2.
But all that is circumstantial evidence which may or may not be used against him. But the positive drug tests could be the smoking gun that could send Bonds to prison. Even though Ting is his doctor he cannot ask for immunity from testifying.
Golden State University law professor Peter Keane says that if Ting doesn't tell the truth he could be charged with perjury and if he doesn't testify he could be charged with contempt of court.
Ting does not have a squeaky clean reputation as he has billed patients for appointments that never took place. The medical board has reprimanded him twice for prescribing dangerous drugs and controlled substances to athletes while not keeping any records of those prescriptions. If he lies for Bonds he could find himself no longer a doctor if proven wrong in court so it behooves him to tell the truth unless he wants to go to prison.
If there is no plea bargain we can expect to see Dr. Ting in court next year.
Wolf Agrees to One Year Deal
Randy Wolf and the San Diego Padres have agreed in principle on a $9 million contract for one year. Wolf had a 9-6 record for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, but he never pitched again after his July 3rd start. He was on a pace to win 18 or even possibly 20 games when he sustained an injury to his shoulder.
He had surgery in September and the deal is contingent on him passing a physical. The addition of Wolf could bolster the Padres pitching staff which led the major leagues in ERA with a 3.70 mark. Wolf still has great stuff as evidenced by his 94 strikeouts in 102 innings.
Injury problems have dogged Wolf for the last three years. He hasn't pitched in more than 18 games in any of those three years. If Wolf is healthy all season. Wolf should take over the No.4 slot in the starting rotation with Jake Peavy, Chris Young, and Greg Maddux being the first three starters. Wolf will be a definite upgrade over Brett Tomko who finished with a 4-12 record.
New Sports Website:Sportscity.com
I was looking for the 2008 major league schedule when I stumbled across a new site. The site said it's official launch date was December 1st so I assume yesterday was the first day to be online. Regardless of when it was launched, it is a valuable source for sports information.
For instance in major league baseball it has the latest rumors in baseball, player salaries by team in 2007, draft bonuses paid in 2007, Top 10 prospects by team and too many other features to list. Whether this is a new site or not it is worth checking out sportscity.com.
