Baseball Irony

I think it is Ironic that Barry Bonds is three away from the Home Run Record and is playing the Braves. He has a chance to pass Hank Aaron against Hank's team. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution describes it this way in an opinion poll.

"Fate is a cruel joker. Otherwise, how to explain the Braves facing the Giants at the time when slugger Barry Bonds is three homers away from breaking ex-Braves great Hank Aaron’s home run record of 755? “I’ve been grilling the pitchers to see which one is going to live in infamy,” Atlanta’s Chipper Jones told the AJC’s Carroll Rogers. “Who’s going to be the Al Downing of this team?”

If you’re Bobby Cox, how do you play this? Your pitchers for the series, barring unforeseen circumstances, are John Smoltz, Tim Hudson, Chuck James and Buddy Carlyle. Do you pitch Barry and risk having the Braves be the team that allows Aaron’s record to fall or do you ditch Barry by walking him and let someone else worry about giving up the fateful homer?"

I believe that you have to pitch to Barry and see what happens. He did not get a HR on Monday, we'll have to see about tonight.

Yeah, it IS ironic. I think he'll hit one home run in the series. He's not gonna tie or break the record until late July/early August...

I think pitchers may take an alternate mode of getting him off to first without any trouble - HBP rather than BB.

I'm still hoping that that Bonds blows out his knees or gets suspended or throw in jail or something, before he gets to 755. There are no words for how much this bothers me, and how much I am going to die inside if Bonds even ties Aaron.

Hank Aaron hit his 755th career homer vs the California Angels. The Angels leftfielder that day was....Bobby Bonds. That's irony.

Hit Bonds at every at bat. Bobby Cox has his own All-Time legacy statistic to pad. That comes first!

I love how people act as if the earth is going to fall off of its axis if Bonds hits 3 more home runs. Move on people, it's a game, and whether you like it or not there are already players in the hall of fame who have done steroids.

What is your qualification? According to Jim Bouton, he and Whitey Ford used to rub Dimethyl sulfoxide on their arms and Ford is in the Hall of Fame. What about the thousands of players who took amphetamines?

Those examples do not implicate steroids.

Maybe not a steroid by definition, but a performance enhancing drug nonetheless, and isn't that the real issue here?

I know that next thing that you are going to say is that I can't prove whether or not those things were effective or not, but that is beside the point as well. My understanding is that intent is 9/10ths of the law.

Besides, if a guy is willing to rub DMSO on his arm, which is used among other things as a paint thinner, then I am pretty sure he would take Stanozolol or HGH if it was put in front of him.

"then I am pretty sure he would take Stanozolol or HGH if it was put in front of him. " You do realize that Minority Report was just a movie, right?

How is speed a performance enhancer?

And that DMSO or whatever it is happens to be legal, checkout a BenGay label the next time you're in Walgreens.

If Whitey Ford cheated because he used BenGay, then you're right.

You asked for it. Here is a link to an article about a track and field star who died of a Ben Gay overdose, no joke. http://newsb...g/node/13403

Also, the stuff that Ford and Bouton used was for horses, so I imagine it was probably a bit stronger than Ben Gay.

It did some more research and found the DMSO is described as one of the oldest and most studied pharmaceutical agents, but one of the least understood. In other words they have been studying this stuff for years and still don't really know what it does.
