Baseball Notebook with Update
Spring Training News
Brewers rookie third baseman Ryan Braun along with Jason Lane is leading all of spring training with 5 home runs. Braun has improved his chances of being on the opening day roster and Lane has probably won an outfield spot with the Astros after struggling so much last season that he was sent to minors. With Carlos Lee a sure starter there are two jobs open with Chris Burke, Luke Scott, Jason Lane, Orlando Palmeiro and Hunter Pence competing for those two spots. Palmeiro is likely to be the fifth outfielder so it will be difficult for Pence to to make the team despite having a fantastic spring and at last look was leading all spring training hitters in batting average. Update: Ryan Braun who is first in home runs and second in RBI's this spring has been sent to the Brewers minor league camp. This update is being posted to keep fantasy players from adding him to their rosters. He may be called up during the season but that obviously depends on how well he plays in minors.
Chuck James pitched 5 scoreless innings for Braves and seems poised to repeat his success of last season when he had a 11-4 record in only 18 starts which is about half the starts any starting pitcher makes in a season....Cubs hammered 24 hits in their 16-4 win over the Mariners yesterday. Derrek Lee looks like he has recovered from his injuries of last season picking up 4 hits in 5 at bats and driving in 3 runs in the win. The other half of the Cubs defeated Brewers in another split squad game and the two teams combined for 35 hits....Willie Bloomquist and Derrek Lee lead all spring players in hits with 20.
Johnny Estrada leads in in RBI's with 16 with his teammate Ryan Braun second with 15 and Khalil Green third with 14....Hunter Pence continues to lead all hitters with at least 20 at bats with a .571 average with Ronnie Paulino of the Pirates in second with a .516 average and Derrek Lee with a .513 average....Jake Peavy leads pitchers with 19 strikeouts but has 6 more innings pitched than second place Rich Harden who has pitched only 8 innings....Indians pitching prospect Adam Miller has the most innings pitched (14) this spring without allowing a run of 886 pitchers listed at mlb.com.
Tigers become the first team to win 14 games this spring while taking over American League lead with the Reds still leading the National League....Devil Rays lead both leagues in losses with 16 with Mariners and Mets tied for second with 14 losses.
