Baseball's Best Division

by Aharner

As the MLB season rolls on, the debate on which division is baseball's best heats up. In 2007, there are three divisions in the debate.

The American League Central, the National League East, and the National League West have provided fans with excitement all season. With three teams in striking distance, each division will certainly provide excitement as we push through August and into September.

The AL Central features two of the brightest young teams in baseball as well as two of the top three teams in the current ESPN power rankings. The Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers have been locked in a first-place battle for most of the season. The two teams use starting pitching and offense to win games, and even showcase some of the brightest stars in the game. Grady Sizemore, Travis Hafner, Victor Martinez, C.C. Sabathia, Justin Verlander, Joel Zumaya, Curtis Granderson, and Magglio Ordonez make any game with either of these teams fun to watch. But behind all of this attention is Johan Santana's and Justin Morneau's Minnesota Twins. Just 7 games out at the time of this post, the Twins have the firepower to come back and make it a close three team race come September.

The NL East may be a seeing another new division winner this season. After watching as the Atlanta Braves won the division for about 85 years, the New York Mets took the crown last season. But, as they struggle this season, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels have propelled the Philadelphia Phillies right back into the thick of things. Or, we could be reverting back to history as the young Atlanta Braves now just stand 1.5 games behind the Mets. The Mets are aging. Tom Glavine, Carlos Beltran, and Billy Wagner just can't stack up to the power of the Phillies or the desire of Bobby Cox and the Braves.

The NL West is a totally different division from the other two. This division freatures three teams powered by solid veteran players with the help of some impact youngsters. The San Diego Padres rely mostly on their young pitching duo of Jake Peavy and Chris Young. The Los Angeles Dodgers fall back on their ace Brad Penny and thier All-Star catcher Russell Martin. The Arizona Diamondbacks heavily rely on offensive threats Eric Brynes, Chad Tracy, and Chris Young. This makes the NL West the most dynamic of the three division, but not always the most fun to watch.

As for which division is the best, it's all in what type of baseball you like. Do you like a slugfest? How about a pitchers dual? Or maybe you just like a game where anything could happen. If you want a slugfest, go watch an NL East game and see Howard and Utley go yard. If you want to see a pitcher's dual, head out west and watch Peavy go against Penny. If you want to see an unpredictable game, watch the AL Central. One day, Verlander is throwing a no-hitter, the next Sizemore is hitting a grand slam in a seven run inning.

I'll go with the AL Central. At the beginning of the year, analysts were saying any 4 of the 5 teams would win the division. With the White Sox now out of the picture, it's down to three. This will be a great race to watch, because all three teams are pretty balanced, solid pitching and solid offense. I say the Tigers win the division, Indians get the Wild Card, Grady Sizemore will have me glued to the television in October.

Even being a Mets fan, I don't think the NL East is on the same tier as the NL West and the AL Central. I'd take the AL Central because of the quality of the Indians and Tigers, and also because of the lingering threat of the Twins making a run.

Early on after my offseason concern about starting pitching proved unfounded (Maine,Perez etc stepped up), I thought the Mets were going to have a monster year, but offensive weakness has taken them down to earth. The division race is closer but I can't credit it to the other teams being good as the Mets not executing. Certainly not in the same class as the AL Central.

Oh, yeah and this post must have been written by a Phillies fan, its the Mets or the Braves this year. Wildcard will probably be in the NL West (who would have thought that after last year). Sorry.

ahem, cough, 10,0000 losses, ahem cough

The NL East is bad. Three teams are in contention because all THREE are seriously flawed. Please don't kid yourself by thinking the NL East is anything close to being good, let alone being the best division in baseball.

Yeah, the NL East probably the 2nd or 3rd worst division in baseball. I think the AL Central is the best... I'm a Twins fan, which may cause some bias, but I think the Tigers and Indians are 2 of the 3 best teams in baseball.

This is a tough question since it is asked now. There are other divisions that I think could be a decent pick instead of my offseason pick (AL Central): The AL West, with the Mariners and the A's in the game, NL East, with the Mets, Phillies and Braves being contenders, etc.

My "finalists" (so to speak) would be the NL West or the AL Central. In the NL West you got the Pads, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Rockies, all of who I think can make it to the playoffs. Here are some stats that you can look at:

NL West: 1934 runs allowed AL Central 2156

Runs Scored: NL West: 2009 AL Central: 2363

I still gotta go with my pick, the AL Central. How can you say that the Rockies are still contenders when they have a record of under .500 right now? It's still in the air of whether they can, since they're only 6.5 games behind the Dodgers right now. That's another main reason why I'm taking the AL Central. Also, the top 3 teams look like a very good pick to win the World Series this year, even though the Twins might not look like it now..

Yeah, you can't say the Rockies aren't decent...I still think they have 0 shot at the playoffs because of their division, but they're a respectable team...

Yes, they sure are a respectable team, but with the Dodgers and Padres being the main contenders, like for the past couple of years, there's a small probability that they're gonna even make the wild card. But, like always, I like a change, and I root fot the underdog, and if they get some pitching, they could possibly do well in the second half and possibly have the Dodgers and Padres stunned...

Back to the topic--->I think that the A.L. Central definitely has the most quality teams. The Tigers and Indians are easily two of the top 5 teams in the majors, and the Twins are near the top 10. From a competition standpoint, I think that the N.L. West provides the most entertainment value. With two very good pitching staffs in the Dodgers and Padres, and two teams with a young core of talent in the Rockies and Diamondbacks, you have four legitimate contenders for a playoff spot in this division. So, even though the National League has become somewhat of a joke, I'll say that its Western division will be the best to watch for the remainder of the year.

I would also vote for the AL Central. I came away from this weekends Mariners-Tigers series very impressed. That is a good baseball team. Cleveland is right there, the Twins are always dangerous, and while the White Sox have no legit shot at the playoffs, they're still good enough to play a spoiler role. Heck, even the Royals have shown more punch than in recent years.

It simple enough...the Royals aren't the laughing stock of the league anymore. They are a young team as well. They don't have the talent of a Detroit or Cleveland, but they can definitely hold their own.

It could have been the Al East if the Yankees were up to their normal standards and if the Orioles could actuall win a game. I think it would be the AL central Indians, White Sox and Twins it just does not get any tougher than that in todays MLB divisions
