Barbaro's Condition Worsens

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro has developed a severe case of laminitis, a potentially fatal disease caused by uneven weight distribution in the limbs. Barbaro shattered his right hind leg at the Preakness on May 20 and after weeks of improvment, his chances for survival are now poor. His right leg has been healing, but because of the extra weight on his other legs, his left hind leg developed laminitis.
Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby by 6 1/2 lengths, was unbeaten in six races, and was expected to make a Triple Crown bid.
