All the hype in this game was on the Yanks' Japanese import Kei Igawa. While he lasted five innings, he gave up seven earned runs and had little in the way of run support. So much for the hype.
But there would be hope for the Bronx Bombers. Starting in the eighth inning, with the Yanks down 7-3, Jason Giambi crushed a three-run homer to pull within a run of the Oriohs (I'm using the Baltimore [or Bawlmer] pronunciation here).
After Mariano Rivera allowed only one runner on the base during the ninth, the Yankees came up with a slight shot at winning the game. After Doug Mientkiewicz lined to first base and Melky Cabrera swung and missed for a strikeout, it was Robinson Cano's turn at the dish. The Yanks' third-year second baseman lined a base hit to center. Then the Captain Derek Jeter (in the lineup despite a sore foot from the night before) walked. Then there was a bit of a scary moment when Bobby Abreu was hit on the kneecap by O's closer Chris Ray. Abreu managed to make it to first with some help by first-base coach Tony Peña and the Yankees trainers. With the bases loaded and two out, guess whose turn it was at bat?
You don't need to live in New York and/or surrounding environments to know about Alex Rodriguez' struggles in the clutch in the past few years. A-Rod knew that so much as a base hit would make him a hero, and anything less would keep him out of the fans' good graces. Ray had worked the count to one ball and two strikes.
Should I tell you how it ended? You probably know the answer, but I'll tell you anyway...
A-Rod smashed a shot to center field, over the reach of anybody in the outfield, and when the ball reached the black spot in the center field bleachers, Yankee Stadium went nuts. A-ROD HAD WON THE GAME WITH A GAME-WINNING WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM!! First the Devl Rays, now the Orioles. Let's see A-Rod do this against someone like the Red Sox or the Mets. I'm happy he came through when it was needed, though!
The rubber match is set for Sunday at 1:35 PM. Eric Bedard and Darrell Rasner will trade Easter baskets and try to strike out the other team's men.
