Balco Bonds Hits 741st HR

Barry "Balco" Bonds hit his 741st home run last night and the sickening reality is setting in that a cheater is going to pass Hank Aaron and sooner rather than later. I will give Balco the benefit of the doubt and say he is hitting now on his own natural ability but still think he padded his home run numbers with the aid of steroids in the early part of this century placing him at the point where he is on the brink of passing one of the most sacred records in sports. If and when he passes Aaron it will be one of the darkest days in the history of sports but it is inevitable that is going to happen barring injury or suspension.

Baseball Daily Digest

Red Sox gained on all the teams in AL East winning over the Orioles 6-1. Curt Schilling 3-1 allowed one run in seven innings to take the win....Last night both teams from Texas were in extra inning games and both teams lost their extra inning encounters. Jhonny Peralta singled in the winning run in the eleventh inning to end the game with Indians taking a 8-7 win. Ian Kinsler hit his 8th homer of the season and drove in three runs while Sammy Sosa also drove in three runs giving him 16 RBI's for the season. There were 32 strikeouts in the game with the Rangers hitters striking out 19 times in 43 at bats.

Chad Durbin 1-1 took the win in the Tigers 6-2 win over the White Sox. Durbin allowed three hits and struck out nine. Tigers have four everyday players hitting under .200 so they can only get better as those averages improve....Mariners defeated Athletics behind the pitching of Jarrod Washburn 1-2 who pitched a complete game shutout while Joe Blanton pitched almost as well pitching the complete game but lost on solo homers by Jose Guillen and Kenji Johjima.

Rockies defeated the Mets 11-5 behind the hitting of Willy Taveras and John Mabry with Taveras going 5 for 6 and Mabry driving in four runs. Taveras was hitting .192 at start of the game but by the conclusion of the game he was hitting .259 an improvement of 67 points....Cubs defeated the Brewers 9-3 pounding out 16 hits in the contest. Cliff Floyd and Derrek Lee were 4 for 5 in the game. Ted Lilly 2-2 took the win allowing one unearned run in seven innings. Brewers did not play like a first place team allowing five unearned runs in the fourth inning. Ben Sheets was pitching well when he had to leave the game with an injury.

Tim Hudson pitched well until the ninth inning when he gave up three runs. Previous to that he had allowed no earned runs. Bob Wickman blew his first save this season as the Braves lost on a passed ball as the Marlins took the win 4-3. Hudson struck out twelve while Scott Olsen struck out ten. Kelly Johnson hit his fifth homer of the season and his 13th RBI placed him one RBI ahead of Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones.

Jimmy Rollins hit his 8th homer of season and Ryan Howard hit his 3rd in the 9-3 Phillies win over the Nationals. Looks like a series with the Nationals was the antidote the Phillies needed to regain their winning ways. Chase Utley was 5 for 5 in the game....Jake Peavy outpitched Brandon Webb in the 2-1 win by the Diamondbacks having pitched 7 innings and allowing only two hits while striking out sixteen but came away with a no decision after Trevor Hoffman blew his first save of the season and took the loss. Scott Linebrink also struck out two giving the Padres pitchers a total of eighteen strikeouts.

Pirates edged the Astros 4-3 in a 16 inning game. Astros had 16 hits but left 18 runners on base with Craig Biggio picking up three hits to place him 49 hits shy of 3000 hits. There were only eleven strikeouts in the game not many for a 16 inning game considering the Diamondbacks and Padres had 25 strikeouts in their nine inning game. So they played 7 more innings but had 14 less strikeouts. The game ended after Jason Bay was intentionally walked to face the worst hitter in baseball Adam LaRoche who singled in the winning run. His hit despite a 1 for 5 night improved his average from .096 to .106 moving him over the LaRoche line of .100.

Cardinals took a 5-1 win over the Reds as the Cardinals scored four times in the eighth inning. Josh Hamilton hit his sixth homer of the season good for third place in NL. Hamilton has 30 fewer at bats than Adam Dunn yet has two more homers and leads the team in RBI's with 12.

Stats Corner

Matt Holliday and Derrek Lee lead the majors in hitting with identical .393 averages with Alex Rodriguez hitting .385 and placing him in first place in all of the Triple Crown categories in the AL....Ian Kinsler and Jimmy Rollins gained on inactive Rodriguez in home run race hitting their eighth homers while Rodriguez has 14. Barry Bonds and Chipper Jones are third in majors with 7 each....Rodriguez leads in RBI's with 34....Matt Holliday leads majors in hits with 35....Jose Reyes leads in stolen bases with 12 and Kenny Lofton who turns 40 next month has 8.

Even with five pitchers trying for fourth win yesterday none of them were able to win a fourth game so Dontrelle Willis and Josh Beckett are only pitchers to win four games this season....Johan Santana leads in strikeouts with 39 while Jake Peavy who had 16 strikeouts yesterday is second with 36....Tim Hudson leads in ERA with 1.22 mark....Mark Hendrickson has the lowest opponents batting average among starters with the opponents hittting .193.

Transactions

Angels sent down Kendry Morales who was hitting .400 and recalled prospect Brandon Wood who may be ready to be an everyday player for the Angels.

Standings at a Glance

Yankees sank deeper into AL East cellar falling four and a half games behind the first place Red Sox. Devil Rays joined the Yankees in last place after their loss but Yankees winning percentage or should we say losing percentage is 8 points lower than the Devil Rays....Indians have a half game lead over Tigers in AL Central....A's and Angels have identical 11-10 records to lead the second place Mariners by a half game in the AL Central.

Braves and Mets both lose so Mets kept their half game lead over the Braves in NL East....Brewers have the largest lead in majors over the second place team with a three game lead over the Reds and Pirates in NL Central....Dodgers have a one game lead over the Giants and Padres in the NL West.

Giants have longest winning streak in baseball with seven consecutive wins while Yankees and Astros have longest losing streaks with both teams losing five in a row.

When will people realize that chances are anyone who would pass Aaron in the next 10-20 years would be and rightfuly should be put under the steroid cloud. That includes A-Rod who dropped his body fat by 7% this last offseason. What Im saying is call them all cheaters, or get off Barrys jock.

Exactly, Howard nearly hit 60 last season, ARod could end up there this year, and Griffey was right there with the best in terms of power, but NONE of these guys get ANY steroid suspicion. People need to sit back and enjoy the game instead of ranting about returning the game to its "pure form", which never existed.

Perhaps you're right about not entirely pure, however the game certainly *was* more pure as early as the 80's than it is now. How many home runs would Hank Aaron have had if a) he had access to steroids and b) was dishonorable enough to use them (which I very much doubt he was).

Who's to say Hank Aaron on steroids doesn't get injured and ends up with less homeruns? Who's to say Mike Schmidt without amphetamines his worse? You guys are being exceptionally naive about all this.

Tartan, with a bold claim such as "exceptionally naive", you really should back that up. And, the more important point is NOT what if he did, or didn't, the point is that Hank didn't cheat, and Barry Bonds did.

naive = thinking Bonds is the blame for steroids

naive = taking it as fact Hank Aaron never used any PED naive = thinking baseball was ever "pure" naive = being so callous and ignorant by focusing your hate of PED's on Bonds

should I go on?

Think about it this way. LEt's say Canseco was truthful, and it was literally everyone taking roids in the 90's. Then Barry still was accomplished because he is the third person to hit 700 HR's, and no one else in the steroids era did it. It's still an accomplishment because it wasn't banned, and a lot of people were doing it.

The problem I think everyone has with Barry is that he admitted to taking illegal - in the US, if not in MLB - drugs and has not been punished. And his, and someone like McGwire's or Palmiero's, complacent attitude toward the whole thing - that they are above the law. Do you think we should just look the other way on all these guys and pretend it (profuse steroid usage) never happened? Don't ask, don't tell?

Sure. It's because of baseballs policies, or lack thereof, that we're in this position in the first place. Why do you think they suddenly changed the policies? And do you think MLB changed the policies on their own accord, becuase it was in the best interest of MLB and it's players? Or do you think there were other factors driving the policy change?

They changed it because of public backlash against steroids, for sure. But nobody seemed to mind when McGwire and Sosa were "saving baseball" in 1998, or even when Bonds was assaulting the HR record in the weeks after 9/11. We all want to eat sausage, but we don't want to know how it's made. If they broke a law, well, by all means, go after them... but don't try to pull this "corrupting the game" routine. The game was corrupt all along and we knew it. We just didn't want to admit it to ourselves.

Not disagreeing with you, but when you get pulled over for speeding, saying that everyone else was doing it is not a valid excuse. I just think the frustration lies that they could have and should have been punished but weren't. Well, Bonds not yet. McGwire was - by lack of HoF votes. I guess that's where justice will be served.

Since I have been following baseball for 52 years I can understand other fans who don't have the upbringing that I had in that cheaters should not be put in a place of honor but guess cheating is OK in the eyes of fans today. Cheating is wrong even if everyone was using steroids or amphetamines.

Ty Cobb sharpened his spikes for intimidation. Preacher Roe and Gaylord Perry threw spitballs. Mike Scott scuffed the ball all the way to a Cy Young and a no-hitter. Joe Niekro and Whitey Ford (with his wedding ring!) were also known for his ball-scuffing acumen. Guys like Graig Nettles and Norm Cash corked their bats. Sign-stealing is one of the oldest means of cheating in the book. In 1968, Denny McLain told Mickey Mantle what pitch he was throwing, so that the Mick could pass Jimmie Foxx on the all-time HR list. Groundskeepers have doctored the field to the home team's advantage since the game began. And why is LASIK surgery, basically steroids for the eyes, considered acceptable? Oh, but cheating is a relatively new phenomenon in baseball, right? I guess us whippersnappers who haven't been following the game for 52 years wouldn't even recognize the clean, pure game of the past...

Not everyone has 20/10 vision after Lasik, the eye structure of the individual determines that. And Ted Williams was born with 20/10, so was he cheating too?

Everyone sharpens their spikes. Matter of fact, does a hockey player cheat when he sharpens his skates?

I'm so tired of everyone defending Barry. Do you think HE cares if your defending him? And last time I checked, none of the guys you mentioned were on the verge of breaking the greatest individual record in sport.

And you know what? Maybe Barry would have broken the record without cheating, but we'll never know. So in theory he may be deserving of the honor..as a player. As a human being, as an ambassador to the game, he does not. He will never "honor the honor" the same as Aaron did. He's an embarrassment to the game.

And it may end up being a moot point anyway, because by the time he gets to Cooperstown (an event and honor he likely will blow off anyway), he won't be the record holder any more.

With Wavefront, Lasik can be counted on to give you 20/16 or better, and if it doesn't enhance your vision the first time, you can go back for a second try. How many athletes can you think of that had the procedure to take a failing part of their bodies (one necessary to their performance) and make it as good as/better than it was when they started playing? Doesn't that sound like PEDs to you? And saying Ted Williams was cheating by being born with 20/10 is completely irrelevant, because the complaint about Bonds isn't about the considerable natural skill he was born with -- it's about the medical enhancement he went through to further his ability and prolong his effectiveness.

Oh, yeah, and hockey players use the threat of cutting people with their skates to intimidate other players all the time, right? And you said my analogy was the dumbest thing you've ever read?

I'm not defending Barry as much as I'm trying to knock people off their smug, self-righteous, holier-than-thou pedestals when it comes to the Bonds thing. So he cheated. So what? The history of baseball is filled with incidents of rule-bending (or worse) to gain a competitive advantage, but to hear some people talk, the steroid users of the 80's and 90's practically invented cheating. It's absurd and more than a little naive.

You made a point above about the McGwire/Sosa race in '98, and you're right. At the time, we all were caught up in the moment and thinking something illegal or immoral was responsible for what we were seeing was never considered. Those of us who know better, including you, could name at least 25 sluggers better than either one of them who never came close to 61 homers, including Aaron and Schmidt. So, in the back of our minds at least, the question may have been there all along. Now, our view of these guys are turned 180' because we know what they did to get where they are. The picture of McGwire jumping in the stands and hugging and kissing Maris' family at the time was a great, sportsmanlike gesture, now, the thought turns my stomach. Barry's the same way. If he legitimately hit 756 homers then fine, who cares if he's an asshole. But we all know its not legitimate, and that's where my problem lies. I don't believe Barry cheated to break the record, that's just a result. He cheated to make an additonal 50 million or whatever and if he feels the need fine, personal choice. If Barry REALLY cared about baseball, and Aaron's legacy, and his own reputation and legacy, he should do the right thing, and retire before he breaks it.

I actually agree with everything you just wrote. :) Hank Aaron is one of my favorite players ever, and it wouldn't bother me one bit if Bonds retired before breaking the record, if simply in deference to the legend. And for the record, I think Aaron was a much better baseball player than pre-2000 Bonds (although pre-2000 Bonds was a HOF-worthy player, too). I guess what irritates me is that the outrage over Bonds breaking this record makes it seem like Aaron will be diminished somehow by his record being broken, when in fact nothing can diminish Aaron's accomplishments on and off the field. We should focus on Aaron as a player during this time, instead of constantly railing about Bonds.

There was an article posted here a couple days ago, and forgive me, I'm new to this wikifying thing, [Hammer Time]. I can honestly say I have never been so angry reading an article in a long time. And it wasn't just the article, it was the responses. I didn't add a comment because I would have been banned from the site if I did. I still may write a rebuttal but at this point I don't see who benefits other than me. I found reading some of the recent articles about Bonds that facts aren't really considered all that much.

You hit the nail on the head about Aaron, he is a legend. As a player and as a person. He has spent his entire post playing career involved in the game to some extent, giving back. I just don't see Barry doing this. The record comes with responsibilities and he just doesn't seem to give a shit. If I knew right now Barry will give the record, and the game, and Aaron's legacy the same respect Hank did then I have no problem with him breaking it.

But to summarize if I was to undertake a reply, is Aaron has spent his entire post-career retirement involved in baseball. From charity work to an executive role with the Braves and on and on.

Anti-Bonds people act like Bonds invented the steroid era. It's turned into blind hatred, which is sad to me. Wake up and smell the coffee...baseball ain't as "pure" as everybody wished it was. Let me say this as well...there are hordes of fans, both casual and hard-core, who want pitchers to bean Bonds. Or they want him to get sidelined via injury or what have you. All that will do is give Selig and MLB a free pass by not forcing them to deal with the record when it is actually broken. I think all of us, as fans, need to observe exactly what baseball does on that fateful day and the weeks following.

Can't believe so many pro-Bonds fans are defending a cheater, a non-team player and a player who tears up baseball cards kids give him to autograph. Wouldn't be surprised if he is on something this year but will give him the benefit of the doubt and say he is having a great year for a 42 year old hitter without the aid of performance enhancers until I am proven wrong. Bonds and Ty Cobb are the two worst role models in the history of baseball.
