[edit] Biography
Howell was a white Mississippi native who brought a ready smile and a strong Hall Of Fame talent to the NBA. His enlightened racial attitudes were a welcome addition to the league in the early 1960s.
Coming north in 1959, Howell spent time with the Baltimore Bullets before settling in with the Pistons. A rugged 6' 8 235-pounder, Howell was tough inside at both ends, but also an intelligent team player.
An All-Star in Detroit, Red Auerbach pulled the trigger to bring him to Boston to replace retiring Tommy Heinsohn. The talented Howell was an upgrade for the Celtics. With Boston, Howell played on three Celtics title winners in the mid and late 1960s to cap his 15,000 point/ 10,000 rebound career.
