Bad news in SD

With the San Diego Padres leading the NL Wild Card by 1/2 game, SD OF Milton Bradley decided to go off on an umpire on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies. His decision to go off on the umpire proved to be a bad one, his own manager, Bud Black, got so ticked off at him that he tackled him to the ground to get Bradley away from the ump, but Bradley fell to the ground, holding his right knee. But, get this, after he was helped off the field, I saw him continue to yell at the ump. He's got his nerve, right after his own manager tackles him to the ground to get him to shut his mouth, he's going to continue to argue? I could be wrong, maybe he was yelling at Bud Black (I know I would be), but it deffinitely looked like he was looking at the first base umpire.
Earlier today, it was announced that Milton Bradley has a torn ACL, and will miss the remainder of the '07 season. Is that just the worst timing of a serious injury or what? SD is just 1/2 game ahead of the red-hot Philadelphia Phillies, and 1 1/2 ahead of the streaking Rockies. Philly is 8-2 in their last 10 games, and the Rockies have won 8 straight, including their 7-3 win over SD on Sunday (COL swept SD this weekend: outscoring them 15-6).
During the past three months Bradley has been the Padres best hitter by a long shot. But, the usual kind, generous, and smart (according to ESPN.com writer Jayson Stark) Milton Bradley just had to snap with 7 games to go. I am pretty sure that Bradley won't go that far again, and I am very shocked that Black actually tackled him. And, that was a big mistake as well, Black, and his Padres will suffer from the loss. I am not sure the Padres would have gotten the Wild Card anyway, though. Not with both the Phillies, and Rockies on hot streaks. Prediction: The absence of Bradley won't make a difference, SD loses the WC to Philly, and will actually end up in third place in the Wild Card race (second place: COL).
Lesson to Learn from this experience:
- MIlton Bradley learned that stop means stop, and not to mess with Bud Black.
- Bud Black learned not to tackle your best hitter with a week left in the regular season, especially when you only have a half-game lead in the wild card reace.
- And yes, even the first base ump learned a lesson here: Don't make a bad call when Mr. Bradley is around.
