BREAKING NEWS: Yanks offer contract to Girardi

There was tons of speculation surrounding this issue, but now it's official. The Yankees have offered a contract to former Marlins manager Joe Girardi, the same guy who rejected an offer to manage the Orioles (smart move). As a side note, shame on the Yankees, A-Rod, and Scott Boras for stealing the spotlight away from the Red Sox and shame on ESPN for giving it almost equal airtime.

I called it! Since the offseason HAS to be all about the Yankees, we can now spend the next few weeks speculating where Donnie baseball goes. Does Torre become the Manager of the Dodgers and Mattingly find him?

Girardi is probably the only guy who could actually replace Torre... this would be a big sign for the Yankees...

Remember Girardi was good at getting all he could out of young players, not overpaid, underachieving, aging baseball players

Agreed, shame on ESPN to give the A-Rod story as much time as it did. I wonder if it was just my roommate and I who noticed on ESPNEWS' BREAKING NEWS corner that "A-Rod Opts Out" was a bigger typeface than "Red Sox Win Series" for about 30 minutes until they replaced that with "Mike Lowell MVP" at 11:41 CT. Shame on ESPN, they have lost nearly all of my respect!

I will say this: last night on SportsCenter, Peter Gammons ripped A-Rod for the timing of his opting out. Gammons, whom I respect more than any other baseball analyst, called it "a disrespect for the game." So, as bad as ESPN's coverage of the whole deal was, props to Gammons for saying what he said.

Imagine if Girardi says no. lol. How sad would THAT be? No Torre, no A-Rod, no Girardi. Mo, Posada, etc. are next.

reports are he's saying yes... and when have Mo, A-rod and Posada said "No" - they said different things but never a definitive no...do not doubt the power of the all mighty dollar...

Mattingly leaving could have an even bigger impact on this ballclub. Who else might jump ship after their manager and bench coach have been shown the door?

Be interesting to see how the veterans respond to Girardi's hard-line managing style. It worked great on the youngsters in Florida, but things are a little different in the Bronx.

It will also be interesting to see which of the veterans are going to be around now that Torre is gone... I could see Posada and Rivera both leaving.
