This is a shame. Microfracture surgery is one of the worse procedures an athlete can endure. It is not a perminent fix. It will actually make the condiiton worse over time, as the scar tissure it creates hardens and becomes stiffer.

Kidd got lucky that he was near the end of his career when he had it. Staudimire will have more problems with his knee as he career goes on.

Oden is 18, 19 years old he will need to have surgery on his knee again by the time he is 25 or 26. This is bad for Oden and the Trailblazers.

This is real bad news. Hopefully, he'll be able to come back like Stoudamire and not like Penny.

Microfracture surgery works better than ever - it actually grows new cartilage in the knee - the key is to get it before you neeeeeeeeed it. And to heal properly and fully before coming back. And MANY other players have come back from the surgery, not just STAT.

I disagree Manny, my research on microfracture surgery still grows tons of scar tissue rather than cartledge. That will stiffen and and you will have the same problem as before

the problem it stops is bone on bone wear. It's better to be stiff and take longer to warm up than rub bone away every time you move. There's these guys are getting this surgery so young. So they can play longer.

regarding Oden's replacement a high up source at the Trailblazers said. "“Przybilla is going to replace him as the starter although Prz would probably have started anyway.” FULL ARTICLE HERE http://coedm.../sports/2423

everyone in the draft saw the x-rays and if the Portland owners didn't see what was wrong with his knee that is the way the cookie crumbles. If what the doctors are saying about this surgery is correct it may or maynot effect Oden in his return. Remember the player in Arizona, had the same surgery almost 2 years ago and he made first team NBA this year so it maynot be a career ending injury. Let us hope for his own interest it doesn't effect his complete playing career. The talk shows are comparing him to Sam Bowie with the pick that Portland made with him. A little unfair in my opinion. The NBA needs players like Oden seems to be a real nice guy that doesn't want the limelight, boy what a change that would be to some of the one today aka Dennis Rodman etc......a down to earth star player from a very poor family making it big in the NBA. No drugs, no brooze, no woman and most of all no steroids or pot......Hope you make it back from the surgery...

"No drugs, no brooze, no woman and most of all no steroids or pot.." How can you possibly make such otrageous and unfounded claims. Just because the media plays the guy up to be Mother Theresa doesn't mean that he is.

Wow, that is sad to read. I don't like the NBA much - I can't be bothered to watch too much of a league that bores me to tears with a Spurs / Jazz finals, but I always want to like it more and I was hoping Oden, as well as others, might provide that spark. I guess I'll hope that GSW make the playoffs again and get to play the Suns. That would be exciting. I must add, though, that the Jazz impressed me with the way they turned GSW on their heads this past playoffs. At one point, they were passing the ball around the offensive net like they were in a practice drill; all the Warriors did was watch in awe. That was when I stopped watching the series, disgusted.
