BREAKING NEWS: Martina Hingis tested positive for cocaine and retires

by Cityhockeyfever

Just mentioned on Cable News Network (CNN), the Associated Press and Reuters report this afternoon that former tennis star Martina Hingis tested positive for cocaine prior to Wimbledon earlier this year.  As this news became public today, Hingis announced her retirement at the age of 27.

During the height of her career, Hingis was at one point ranked #1 in the world and had won five Grand Slam titles. She maintains she is innocent of the drug allegations, but states she's retiring due to health issues.  Hingis had to overcome various injuries in recent years, including ligament damage to both her ankles. But retiring at such a young age is in a way a bit puzzling.

It's hard to believe she's retiring and only 27 years old, but then again wasn't Steffi Graf only in her early 30s when she did? Then again, she had a family. Martina Hingis turned pro when she was just 14.

Women's tennis is more and more a game of girls as opposed to women. Whereas in other sports people enter the sport at 22/22/23 and leave in their mid to late 30s, in Women's tennis, girls enter the sport at the age of 15/16/17 and seem to leave before 30.

I guess the breakup with Sergio Garcia was more than she could handle.

I guess that's what it takes to chase a little yellow ball around for an hour and a half.

I don't really follow tennis myself, but this is news whether we like it or not. Hingis isn't a nobody in professional tennis. She was at one point the top-ranked player in the world. Most sports fans know who she is. That's partly why this news is front and center right now.

After reading the linked article, it's clear that even a drunk third-year law student could drive several trucks through the "evidence" of positive tests.

Hingis retired before, and then came back last year, she retired at 23/24ish. This may be a silly question, but is cocaine on a list of banned substances? Does it enhance performance?

It's not a enhancement performing drug. That's the point Hingis made in her statement. Even so, cocaine I assume is a banned substance from the WTA Tour and why shouldn't it be? Tennis players performing in high-end tournaments while on drugs obviously makes no sense whatsoever to begin with.

You're quite right, but at least she didn't try to fiddle the game. They could have been roids, but she took something that didn't help her game, and would get her in trouble. Really strange really. I don't see why use of drugs is punished, to be honest. People know it's harmful. If they choose to take it, let them, as long as they don't end up hurting others. I see it as a form of "natural selection".

Alex - and I mean this with total respect - you will understand why there must be societal consequences for taking drugs such as cocaine when you have kids of your own. Believe me dude, issues that seemed so clear to me during my college days are very different now that I'm old (compared to most of you), employed, married and a parent.

Cocaine could be seen a PED. It's extremely similar to amphetemines that are banned as a PED.
