BREAKING NEWS: Clemens in Mitchell Report

29
Vote

by Chachi

ESPN has just broken in with the news that future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens will be named in the Mitchell Report set to be released today at 2 p.m. ESPN is citing a source with knowledge of the report and the fact that Clemens' trainer Brian McNamee, who was also a trainer for the New York Yankees, was interviewed by Mitchell and his team. Clemens, who has unofficially retired this year, has won 7 Cy Youngs, is 8th in career wins all-time and is second in career strikeouts all-time.

More to come on this story as the day progresses.

UPDATE: ESPN has the story up (finally! ... it was on TV for almost half an hour already) at http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3153129

UPDATE - 11:30 AM: Andy Pettite and several other high profile Yankees are also expected to be named in the Mitchell Report.

Here is my one problem with this whole report; we don't know what type of evidence they have for anything like this. The entire report could be second or third hand information that would never be admissable in court or it could be speculative at best. Who knows? This could get really interesting.

exactly...of course Scott Boras agrees with you.

Its not designed to prosecute anyone and its no more than a purge of baseball's mistakes, whether that be the players, coaches, managers, GMs, Owners or the league office itself.

Its an excercise in fixing the game...I dunno if it'll work and at what cost, but it will supposedly end the steroid era

And as big as the names part might be ... 60-80 really isn't that much, considering there have been over 5,200 players in the bigs since 1985 (Jayson Stark of ESPN claimed that's about 1.5 percent of the league). Besides, considering the relative lack of cooperation (since Mitchell couldn't subpeona or punish people for not talking), there's no telling; that 60-80 could merely be scratching the surface. If it fixes baseball, that's all well and good, but I'd take the names with a grain of salt.

I don't see how this Mitchell Report helps anybody. All this is going to do is start a witch hunt, and is that really what baseball needs? It's time to let bygones be bygones. We can't go back and take away the numbers these guys put up, and it's likely that multiple players from every team used PEDs anyway (pitchers and batters). So to me, this doesn't help baseball at all. We need to test for and prevent steroid use going forward, not go back and point fingers at who (possibly) used them in the past. Sometimes you gotta just let it go.

I hate to bring race into this, but one of the talking heads on ESPN (I can't remember which one) brought this up: Barry Bonds, on steroids, is one of the best hitters ever. Roger Clemens (if this report can be believed) is one of the best pitchers ever on steroids. Here's my question: If Clemens gets in and Bonds doesn't, couldn't that be construed as racial in nature?

Absolutely. Heck, we want McGuire in the HOF, and then he got the balls knocked out of him in voting, and we wanted Giambi to be in once he retires. But Bonds and Sosa take steroids, we say ban them. That sounds like a painful and maybe racially based double standard.

It's the same for me, Sosa and McGwire will always be connected. I'm interested in the Clemens/Bonds dynamic, though. Great players in their 20s and early 30s, and in their late 30s and into their 40s Bonds exploded and Clemens continued being dominant. To me, the only two things that differentiate them are their personalities (Bonds is an extremely arrogant ass, Clemens is just an arrogant ass) and their skin color.

The use of PEDs strikes a raw nerve with me. This was hashed out quite sometime ago here. Does that condone the sins of others who are in the HOF? No. Should athletes who cheated be rewarded for individual achievement? IMO - No. Am I opening the floodgates here knowing that many others do not agree with me on this issue. Not intentionally. Make no mistake about it. This is a dark day for sports. But a necessary day. The question is - where do we go from here?

Yeah, that's exactly my point, we have to worry about preventing this in the future, instead of going back and blaming people for what happened in the past. People are always going to cheat if they can; the key thing is to have effective testing and suspensions going forward, not to look back and point fingers for things that happened 5 years ago.

Bill Mazeroski and Pee Wee Reese agree with you, KD.

I however agree with Davis that the Hall of Fame has long been a popularity contest. Why else is there a difference between a "first ballot guy" and every one else? Either you ARE a Hall of Famer or you aren't. Players don't earn their way in after being on the ballot a few years into voting, they earn their way in DURING THEIR CAREERS.

Goose Gossage, Bert Blyleven and Jim Rice agree with me.

Also, Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe are banned by MLB. Please note: The National Baseball Hall of Fame is NOT run, a part of or governed by MLB.

You of all people should know better, Davis. Baseball is the one sport who protects and ensures the history of the game.

We could both write up a list of ten players we think who should be in and not in, and the lists would be different. And, there is no doubt in the early days the Hall voting was a popularity contest amongst the good ol' boys, but that is no longer the case. I know pretty well people with Hall voting credentials and to a man they take the responsibility very seriously.

Is it a perfect system? No.

Is it better than it was? Yes.

Twenty-five years ago or so, I took my youngest cousin, who was about ten at the time, to a Whalers game in Hartford to meet Gordie Howe. Howe posed for a picture with him, which I then took back and had Howe sign for him. Today, when you walk into my cousin's house the first thing you see is that picture, so yes, Davis, the Hall of Fame means something to some people.

A helluva lot more than the crap Baseball Prospectus tries to sell us, that's for damn sure.

What if baseball was to do to the regular ballot what they do for the Veteran's Committee?

I'm all for taking the vote away from the writer's and giving it to the Hall of Famers themselves. I agree with you to this extent that 500 writers, no matter how much integrity they think they have, will not vote for someone that pissed them off 20 years ago. And, in my opinion, they don't know the game well enough to make a tough decision. If you have two, say, shortstops, one a power hitter and one a defensive specialist, the hitter will get in because the writer's don't know the game well enough to understand how important defense is.

If the vote was held by the people who played the game the best, and understand the value of some lesser know values or fundamentals, then the voting would be legitimized.

Ask Harmon Killebrew if there is a difference between first ballot and not. Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr went in on their first ballot. Bruce Sutter on his 12th. That is 11 years of lost income for Sutter going to card shows and the like as a Hall of Famer, so yes, it does matter.

I mentioned Killebrew specifically because that's a question I've actually asked him. He is very bitter even today that, as the fourth alltime homer hitter at the time of his retirement, he had to wait three years after being eligible to get in. He lives here in Scottsdale, AZ, and is a wealthy man. He invested well as a player and is a smart businessman who has made a nice living for himself, HOF income notwithstanding. And I don't think there are any "poor" Hall of Famers, but there is no question your income potential skyrockets once you are elected.

Well that is his own problem, he wants to look at life a particular way. In reality, you get in or you don't. I knew Killebrew was HOF'er, had roughly 570 HR's but had no idea he wasn't first ballot or third. After 10-20 years, who remembers if it was first ballot or not? (Other than Harmon of course). Maybe can be bitter about it back then, but get over it. As for card show income, hasn't seemed to hurt Pete Rose.
