BREAKING NEWS: Barry Bonds Indicted

Barry Bonds, the all time home run leader, was indicted today on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. Will he ever play again?
Barry Bonds, the all time home run leader, was indicted today on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. Will he ever play again?

As if we didn't see this coming, Barry Bonds has been indicted on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice by a federal grand jury. This story was broken by KTVU reporter Rita Williams. This basically means that Barry Bonds is being accused of lying about his use of performance enhancing drugs. The indictment marked the end of one of the longest grand jury investigations in California history.

The text of the indictment is here (PDF format, from ESPN). If you prefer it in HTML, Christof found this version from The Smoking Gun.

From the indictment (emphasis added by Tylersalt):

"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes."

Bonds' attorney, John Burris:

"I'm surprised, but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."

Click the article below for more details:

http://www.ktvu.com/news/14606146/detail.html

DETAIL EDITS:

  • Some are surprised that there was no indictment on tax evasion.
  • It is unknown at this time what brought on the indictment today, given that the investigation took four years. It is possible that Greg Anderson flipped and decided to testify against Bonds, or it could be that the grand jury decided that they had enough paperwork and circumstantial evidence for an indictment.
  • There is no news as to when a trial will occur. (Edited by Justlittleoleme to add: Bonds is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on Dec. 7.)
  • Details of possible punishments for the charges:
    • Each of the four counts of perjury would carry up to 5 years in prison and 3 years of supervised release.
    • The count of obstruction of justice carries 10 years in prison and also 3 years of supervised release.
    • If found guilty of all counts, Bonds could face up to 30 years in federal prison.
  • A federal judge just ordered Greg Anderson to be released from prison. That could mean that he did in fact flip on Bonds... Tylersalt 23:47, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

no, it's the prosecution's job to prove guilt. it's the jury's job to find innocence or guilt. Neither has happened yet. I'm not a Bonds apologist (anymore...), but let's keep our heads on straight. People in this country are innocent until they have been found guilty by a jury of their peers.

There's some real scientific evidence. People quite often get bigger as they get older, especially people with work ethics such as Barry Bonds (and most professional athletes). "He looks like he uses steroids" just doesn't quite cut it.

BBall, I'd love to argue beside you but Bonds took plenty of stuff. Whether it helped him or not is arguable but his usage is documented, it's been talked about by people he was close to and everyone in his circle has been nailed already. Griffey told the story about how Barry was jealous of McGwire and he was "going to do better stuff than McGwire did" - that doesn't mean Andro.

OK, well if that's the way you look at it, fine. But he won't get out of this one. His lawyer's may plead him out on the perjury, on the consiracy, but not on the money laundering. That's covered under the Patriot Act and jail time is mandatory. I have a feeling the only Hall he will see is the one leading to solitary.

Bball, the difference here is the government almost never loses. They win over 92% of the time. If Greg Anderson testifies, it's game over because then they have an accomplice that is willing to say he gave bonds steroids

While I think your statistic has merit, i think Bball's assertion of innocence until proven guilt is fare...

although one could conclude that the procedure is little more than a formality at this point...

Bonds doesn't have to go to prison for all I care...

but come the start of the next baseball season, who's the real home run king?

Barry Bonds. You can't just make the HRs unhappen.

Remember, the stuff they are pinning on him is from a couple years ago; when what he did wasn't against baseball's rules.

And until you can prove that Aaron didn't use greenies, etc. and Ruth didn't use bennies and coke...

I mean... Who really cares? WHY is HR King really such a glorious record? You don't play the game to hit HRs you play the game to win rings!

He is in deep shit. Has anyone else read this month's Playboy (Yes, the articles)? His former mistress made some comments about the money, the 'roids (and domestic violence threats that makes Elijah Dukes look like a choir boy) that are gonna pin him to the fan. If they pull people out to testify against him on this constantly refreshing pile of charges (paging Mr Anderson... again), he's toast.

Exactly why they waited to get him now. Anderson is released on other stuff. Now that he's free they can squeeze him again (Why squeeze a guy already in the joint?)

In the Playboy, whatshername explained how Barry threatened to not just kill her but cut her head off ('roid rage?) if she talked about his 'roid usage and also gave her specific information on how to launder the money he gave her. (Why a dude that makes HOW MANY millions needed to launder $10k here and $20k there is beyond me...)

Obviously she's seen as a lover scorned so I don't know what kind of testimony she could provide, but she's a smoking gun in all this.

BTW, she's just an average Scottsdale Beotch.
