BCS Banter

There is a whole week to discuss the significance of the Vikings victory on Sunday (including the fact that they scored 41 points against the Giants). But, I’m quite annoyed with another topic… College Football.
I was extremely annoyed when I saw the AP Poll for this week.
1. Missouri (45) 11-1 1,604 2. West Virginia (20) 10-1 1,574 3. Ohio State 11-1 1,469 4. Georgia 10-2 1,354 5. LSU 10-2 1,269 6. Virginia Tech 10-2 1,266 7. Kansas 11-1 1,217 8. USC 9-2 1,212 9. Oklahoma 10-2 1,191 10. Florida 9-3 1,029 11. Hawaii 11-0 991
I was a little less annoyed when I saw the USA Today Poll
1. West Virginia (37) 10-1 1,467 2. Missouri (17) 11-1 1,454 3. Ohio State (6) 11-1 1,383 4. Georgia 10-2 1,232 5. Kansas 11-1 1,161 5. Virginia Tech 10-2 1,161 7. LSU 10-2 1,134 8. Oklahoma 10-2 1,126 9. USC 9-2 1,073 10. Hawaii 11-0 958
While looking up and down the AP Poll there were some things I liked, and many things that I couldn’t get over. Let’s start with this fact: Georgia is #4, the highest ranked SEC team. They are the SEC team with the best show of making the championship game, but they aren’t even going to the SEC Championship game, because they lost to East Champ Tennessee.
How about this little nugget: LSU a 2-loss team is ranked #5, and Kansas a 1-loss team is ranked #7. This will hurt Kansas’ BCS Ranking. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Kansas’ one loss was to Missouri the #1 rated team. LSU has lost to Kentucky and Arkansas (two un-ranked teams), and it wasn’t like Kansas got blown out by Mizzou (see Michigan/Ohio St. last year, for more backing).
Oklahoma is a very good team. I definitely could see them beat Mizzou in the Big 12 Championship next weekend (OU won 41-31 in October). That would let Ohio State quietly sneak back into the Championship game against West Virginia (which basically has their spot locked up). Kansas needs to cheer for Mizzou this weekend. If Mizzou wins, then Kansas would most likely get a BCS Bowl and Oklahoma would be on their way to the Cotton Bowl.
Interesting Tid-Bit: If UCLA beats USC and Arizona beats Arizona State this weekend, UCLA would make the Rose Bowl. Then you have to question whether a three-loss USC or Arizona State deserves the final spot. If they both win their games, they would have two losses and could both make a BCS bowl.
Almost A Given: Hawaii beating Washington this weekend will lock up a BCS Berth for the Warriors. Yes Hawaii deserves this spot. They can’t help that no one wants to play them non-conference. There was no real banter about Boise State, and Hawaii is in the same conference.
I don’t even know what teams would make it to the BCS besides Ohio State, West Virginia. No conference can have more than 2 teams (as was the case last year when Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin all finished inside the Top-8 of the BCS Rankings). The Big 12 and SEC could both argue for 3 teams.
-We can rule out Notre Dame.
BCS Teams:
- Big 10 Champ: Ohio State
- Big East Champ: West Virginia
- ACC Champ: Boston College or Virginia Tech
- SEC: Tennessee or LSU and Georgia
- Pac-10 Champ: USC or Arizona State or UCLA
- Big 12: 2 of 3 between Oklahoma, Kansas and Mizzou
- Undefeated: Hawaii
- Possibilities: Illinois (if Ohio State makes Championship), Boston College
Isn’t this annoying and interesting.
