BCS Banter

There is a whole week to discuss the significance of the Vikings victory on Sunday (including the fact that they scored 41 points against the Giants). But, I’m quite annoyed with another topic… College Football.

I was extremely annoyed when I saw the AP Poll for this week.

1. Missouri (45) 11-1 1,604
2. West Virginia (20) 10-1 1,574
3. Ohio State 11-1 1,469
4. Georgia 10-2 1,354
5. LSU 10-2 1,269
6. Virginia Tech 10-2 1,266
7. Kansas 11-1 1,217
8. USC 9-2 1,212
9. Oklahoma 10-2 1,191
10. Florida 9-3 1,029
11. Hawaii 11-0 991

I was a little less annoyed when I saw the USA Today Poll

1. West Virginia (37) 10-1 1,467
2. Missouri (17) 11-1 1,454
3. Ohio State (6) 11-1 1,383
4. Georgia 10-2 1,232
5. Kansas 11-1 1,161
5. Virginia Tech 10-2 1,161
7. LSU 10-2 1,134
8. Oklahoma 10-2 1,126
9. USC 9-2 1,073
10. Hawaii 11-0 958

While looking up and down the AP Poll there were some things I liked, and many things that I couldn’t get over. Let’s start with this fact: Georgia is #4, the highest ranked SEC team. They are the SEC team with the best show of making the championship game, but they aren’t even going to the SEC Championship game, because they lost to East Champ Tennessee.

How about this little nugget: LSU a 2-loss team is ranked #5, and Kansas a 1-loss team is ranked #7. This will hurt Kansas’ BCS Ranking. It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Kansas’ one loss was to Missouri the #1 rated team. LSU has lost to Kentucky and Arkansas (two un-ranked teams), and it wasn’t like Kansas got blown out by Mizzou (see Michigan/Ohio St. last year, for more backing).

Oklahoma is a very good team. I definitely could see them beat Mizzou in the Big 12 Championship next weekend (OU won 41-31 in October). That would let Ohio State quietly sneak back into the Championship game against West Virginia (which basically has their spot locked up). Kansas needs to cheer for Mizzou this weekend. If Mizzou wins, then Kansas would most likely get a BCS Bowl and Oklahoma would be on their way to the Cotton Bowl.

Interesting Tid-Bit: If UCLA beats USC and Arizona beats Arizona State this weekend, UCLA would make the Rose Bowl. Then you have to question whether a three-loss USC or Arizona State deserves the final spot. If they both win their games, they would have two losses and could both make a BCS bowl.

Almost A Given: Hawaii beating Washington this weekend will lock up a BCS Berth for the Warriors. Yes Hawaii deserves this spot. They can’t help that no one wants to play them non-conference. There was no real banter about Boise State, and Hawaii is in the same conference.

I don’t even know what teams would make it to the BCS besides Ohio State, West Virginia. No conference can have more than 2 teams (as was the case last year when Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin all finished inside the Top-8 of the BCS Rankings). The Big 12 and SEC could both argue for 3 teams.

-We can rule out Notre Dame.

BCS Teams:

  • Big 10 Champ: Ohio State
  • Big East Champ: West Virginia
  • ACC Champ: Boston College or Virginia Tech
  • SEC: Tennessee or LSU and Georgia
  • Pac-10 Champ: USC or Arizona State or UCLA
  • Big 12: 2 of 3 between Oklahoma, Kansas and Mizzou
  • Undefeated: Hawaii
  • Possibilities: Illinois (if Ohio State makes Championship), Boston College

Isn’t this annoying and interesting.

An argument for Mizzou being ahead of WVU is that Missouri's loss came to Oklahoma, and West Virginia's loss was at the hands of South Florida. Personally, I'd put WVU as #1, but I can see the argument for putting Mizzou up there. And if Missouri beats the Sooners in the Big XII title game, they should definitely be #1.

But does it really matter...Mizzou needs to be OU...thats for sure...but being #1 or #2 is irrelevant...

In terms of BCS rankings, 1 or 2 doesn't matter. But in the human polls, not being #1 might cost you a top 2 spot in the BCS. The computer poll might have you at 10th, or the Harris Poll might rank you 4th. Then you get screwed indirectly.

of course, at the end of the day...no matter who plays between Mizzou, OSU and WVU...would you say the best team in college football would be crowned nat'l champs?

I don't know JuT, and that's the problem with the BCS. Hawaii wins every game, has no shot at a title. Oklahoma loses twice and has a better shot at getting there than Kansas. Virginia Tech loses to BC and is somehow ahead of them. It's all so silly.

The only problems I have with this year's BCS is that there are likely going to be four teams with a legitimate claim on a title shot, and only two will get it. WVU and Missouri are the obvious ones, but Ohio State (lost to Illinois) and Hawaii (undefeated) should have *some* chance at at a title. My system -- seen at A BCS That Actually Works! -- would accomplish that. But you'll have to wait for my follow-up article :)

Since we're bantering, why does everyone try to pun the BCS with "B.S." when they can much easier-ly call it "Bull Crap Shit"?

Or just call the Bowl Subdivision "The B.S."

If we're gonna change it, why not change the initials to "F.T.W." or "K.M.F.A" or "F.Y."? You outstandingly missed my point of not changing it, but using what is there already... thanks for proving generalizations are usually true.

No Manny, you're not even in the top 25 of the SOB poll. A true SOB is actually irritating, not someone trying desperately to antagonize. But hey, try a little harder next year and you might become bowl eligible.

As a WV Fan I have to say it doesnt matter if we are 1 or 2, but as for a better way of doing the championship I am all for a playoff, only way you going to know for sure.I believe Oklahoma is going to be the better team against Missouri, opening the door for Ohio St. (Which I'd Love to see).. but then again right now,you could argue that Hawaii, Ga and Lsu are better than Ohio St. I totally agree we need a better way. I would love to see it this year for the fact that if WVU wins the National Championship then it would be undisputed. One things for sure though is WVU got to beat Pitt Saturday first, or this is going to be a bigger mess. GOOOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

West Virginia is far from a lock to being in the national championship game. The Pitt game is a sneaky rivalry game that WVU will need to come out ready for. Arkansas just took out LSU in a similar situation last week. If only the Panthers had someone who was like McFadden.

I totally agreE we have to get past Pitt. Can't overlook them even as bad as a season their having, just cant... It has happened all over the league and that's the reason WVU is there. I not counting chickens just supporting and hoping. With some belief that they are going to be there. GOOOOOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!!!!

Think you can do a better poll than the sportswriters, coaches an other random people (Harris Poll)? Prove it at the (unofficial) BCS fan poll.
