The very first time I watched the ESPYs was the year Jim Valvano made his famous "Never give up, don't ever give up" speech (I think it was 1993 or 1994). Needless to say, I was mesmerized along with those in the audience and those watching on TV. I was permanently hooked. Though the quality has declined considerably since then, I had to watch LeBron and Jimmy Kimmel host. Without further ado, the Awesomely Awesome moments of the 2007 ESPYs...
- Images montage, undeniably fabulous. Great way to start the show. Brendan McKeon would be proud.
- The PA lady is waaaaaaaaaaaay too excited.
- The Italian Stallion makes an appearance! This is shaping up well...
- Jimmy Kimmel is killing me so far. This is great. I could go on about Kimmel, but that would take too long. We'll just skip until after the monologue.
- LeBron comes out on a throne. That's not cliche or anything. Looking spiffy in a white suit.
- I love the format of presenting the nominees, the drawings and scrapbook thing. Very artsy.
- Devin Hester wins Breakthrough Athlete. He has Heidi-esque braids running down-the-back of his head.
- Kimmel and Danica Patrick in a shower? With a horse? No comment.
- Peyton wins Championship Performance award over LeBron? Sketchy. No matter how much I want to hate Peyton, I can't. It's impossible.
- What's with so many guys not wearing ties and opening their collars? Not attractive unless you're an athlete.
- The Best Game category this year is amazing. All three nominees could win, the presentation/highlights of all three games was awesome. "Teenage Wasteland" is always the perfect song for the category. Boise State wins, deservingly. And Ian Johnson makes an appearance, but no comment. I wanted him to thank his fiance. Bummer.
- Jimmy V ESPY...what a good idea. Definitely going to a deserving woman this year, Kay Yow. Great story.
- Robert Horry is Will Smith. I'm convinced. It's uncanny how much they look alike.
- I love LaDainian Tomlinson. He calls his O-line his bodyguards, for God's sake! He just oozes class (with the exception of overreacting after he lost to the Patriots). I love it.
- Good grief, TO is wearing a white jacket with a Cowboys star on the back, and a pair of jeans. Kimmel says he didn't know TO was Jewish. I have to say, Kimmel is pretty on fire.
- Awkward City time: Kate Walsh and Peyton. Kate says they're both tall, that they have something in common. Peyton simply says, "Uh, script?" Can't get too much more awkward than this.
- Kate COMPLETELY butchering Taryne Mowatt's name.
- A Dane Cook sighting. Please make him stop before he makes another movie.
- Fantastic piece on the Arthur Ashe winners from Ireland. Moving, disturbing and inspiring all at the same time. It makes me think we really can all get along. Those two Irishmen gave a speech full of great quotes.
- LeBron's version of "My LeBrogative" is pretty creative. Not as good as Peyton's nod of approval, though. More like a bob of approval.
- Great song selection for another stacked category, Best Play, "T-N-T." I have to say, I have become more impressed with Endy Chavez's catch the more I see it. But Boise State wins again, good for them, let's give Ian Johnson some face time...YES! HE THANKED THE FIANCE! Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
- We actually get to see the PA lady. Interesting, I wonder what her name is. She's also the lady who does the "Who's Now" voice-overs.
- Best Moment is always one of my favorite categories. Saints are very deserving. I'll always admire Drew Brees for signing with New Orleans (and not signing within my division in Miami) and playing a huge part in rebuilding that city with the rest of his team.
- Colts win best team, no surprise. And, could it be? More Italian Stallion? This is just wonderful!
- Gretzky and Mary J. Blige? Interesting pair.
- By far, best award and song selection of the night, "Ain't No Other Man" for Best Male Athlete. All of these guys have the potential to be HOFers: Manning, LT, LeBron, Tiger, Federer! Good golly, LT wins, it had to be pretty close, and all the athletes are on the stage. Cool stuff.
Music performance unnecessary. An OK show overall, it gets a B-. Kimmel was good, but he didn't show up for the last 45 minutes, which was fine, but it lacked the comedy of the first half. Hey, it's an awards show that no one really cares about, including the people that win. So I'm guessing that's about as good as it gets.
