Award Race: August 2

12
Vote

by user Timothy Moreland(Bball3345)

Award Race April 16

Award Race April 29

Award Race June 28

It has been about a month since I have updated the Award Race. (Note: These are who I would vote for, not who I think will actually win them). So, let's jump right in...

AL MVP

1. Derek Jeter

2. Joe Mauer

3. David Ortiz

4. Grady Sizemore

5. Travis Hafner

Jeter has been one of the top hitters in the majors, while carrying a Yankees team filled with holes. Yes, even a team with a gazillion dollar payroll can have holes. With A-Rod having a down year at the plate, and the rotation outside of Mussina not scaring anyone, Jeter's performance stands head-and-shoulders above his teammates. With the additions of Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle, this Yankees team appears headed to yet another postseason performance.

By the way, Chris Shelton was the AL MVP in my first edition on April 16th. Now he is in AAA, replaced by Sean Casey at 1B for the Tigers. My, how times change.

NL MVP

1. Albert Pujols

2. Carlos Beltran

3. Miguel Cabrera

4. Alfonso Soriano

5. Brandon Webb

6. Chase Utley

Albert Pujols garnered such a huge lead before he went down with injury, even Beltran's great season can't touch Pujols' insane .322/.436/.697 line. Both players play Gold-Glove caliber defense, but the edge goes to the centerfielder on that one. If Pujols remains hampered by injuries or misses more time, this award becomes Beltran's to lose. This will be a two-man race until the very end.

  • I had to throw in Utley, because he deserves to be mentioned. In my NL All Star preview, I failed to include Utley on the team, which I still believe was the right decision at the time. However, he has done everything humanly possible since then to prove me wrong. At this point, I would rank Utley among the top ten most valuable bats in the Major Leagues. Not only does Utley appear to be a lock for next year's All-Star game, I will more than likely be replacing Marcus Giles with Utley on next year's NL Team of the Future.

AL Cy Young

1. Johan Santana

2. Justin Verlander

3. Francisco Liriano

4. Jonathan Papelbon

5. Roy Halladay

Santana has managed to hold off the surging rookies to keep the title of "Best Pitcher in the American League." As the workload increases, the veteran Santana holds an advantage over the young guns. Liriano gets downgraded slightly for his work in the pen. Still, if he keeps throwing gems until the end of the year, a case could easily be made he deserves the Cy Young. Papelbon has been far and away the best reliever in baseball this year, allowing only three runs the entire season. It looks as though the Rookie of the Year race will be very interesting, as three of these Cy Young candidates are rookies.

NL Cy Young

1. Brandon Webb

2. Carlos Zambrano

3. Chris Carpenter

4. Bronson Arroyo

5. Roy Oswalt

In my June 28 Award Race, one user believed Webb was beginning a slump and would no longer deserve the Cy Young. This comment came following a 7-run outing by Webb. Since then, Webb has gone 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA. So much for that slump. The Diamondbacks' ace still deserves the Cy Young, and I expect him to still be on top come the end of the season. I enjoyed adding Chris Capuano to the Top 5 last edition, but he has fallen out of the top 5 and is now around the Top 15 or Top 20. Jason Schmidt has the strongest argument of anyone not on the following list.

AL Rookie of the Year

1. Justin Verlander

2. Francisco Liriano

3. Jonathan Papelbon

4. Jered Weaver

5. Joel Zumaya

Not a single offensive player on the list. A full season from Michael Napoli or a healthy Ian Kinsler could have challenged for the fifth spot, but these pitchers are near untouchable. Had Howie Kendrick, the starting secondbaseman for my AL Team of the Future, started the season as the Angels 2Bman, then he certainly would have challenged for the award. I have a hunch Verlander will get passed up by Liriano, soon. These five guys are going to help the American League remain the superior league for at least another decade or so.

NL Rookie of the Year

1. Joshua Johnson

2. Dan Uggla

3. Hanley Ramirez

4. Prince Fielder

5. Takashi Saito

A 2.52 ERA in 16 starts and 7 relief appearances is not all that bad. Had he been putting up numbers like that in the Florida rotation since Opening Day, then we would be talking about a Cy Young candidate in addition to a runaway with Rookie of the Year. Teammates and double-play combo, Uggla and Ramirez, rank just behind him. Uggla brings great range at second and 16 home runs to the field, while Ramirez has stolen 30 bases for the young Marlins team.

I can't see the argument for Jeter even being top 5 in the AL... especially not over Papi. I also have to wonder how the guy leading the NL in HRs and 4th in RBIs is not anywhere on the NL list.

Also Webb should no longer be in the MVP race. He's still a cy young candidate, but he hasn't been dominating enough to win an MVP as a pitcher this year.

Most years, I normally don't even place a pitcher in my MVP candidates; however, I think Arizona, with an offense led by Eric Byrnes, will win the Wild Card. Webb deserves some credit for going out there and giving Arizona a great shot at winning almost every start.

As for Howard, he has done wonders for my Fantasy team all year long, but is not the NL MVP, or even top 5. His teammate, Utley, has a better OBP(.392 to .371), a strong SLG(.566), more stolen bases (12 to 0), and more R+RBI(160 to 149). Not to mention, Utley does this at 2B, while Howard is a 1Bman.

I agree...Sizemore's offensive numbers are really just OK. If you include Mauer, you have to give Morneau some consideration too. It's a crowded race, but it's all Papi's. That team is his: Manny might be a great hitter, but he NEVER comes up with Ortiz's clutch hits.

Beltran has had more of an effect? How quickly we forget... Pujols is hitting .446 w/RISP to Beltran's .323. Also, in late innings of close games, Pujols is hitting .297 with 6 HRs to Beltran's .283 with 1 home run. Pujols seems to have had a decent effect.

I've got to go hands down Ortiz with the AL MVP because he hasn't done anything not to deserve it and he has carried a team that has almost no starting pitching. And with the NL Rookie of the Year I think Conor Jackson deserves a mention, because he leads all rookies in doubles.

Here's what you're way off on: Sizemore is nowhere near the top 5, Jeter is not even close to the MVP in the AL, Roy Halladay deserves to be #2 at worst, where's Ryan Zimmerman? where's Ryan Howard? Brandon Webb in the top 5 of NLMVP?! Bronson Arroyo does not belong here - he's not even the best pitcher on his own team!!
Is that better?

You think Harang has been a better pitcher than Arroyo? Arroyo's ERA is about .4 better than Harang's. I have Halladay in the Top 5, so I wouldn't really call that "way off." Zimmerman has been above average for a thirdbaseman, but he hasn't done anything to set him apart. His OBP is good, but not great. He doesn't have a ton of power. His stolen bases aren't helpful with 8 in 14 attempts. I have already covered Howard and Jeter. Yeah, that's better.

Harang 4-2 in last 8. OVERALL - 11-7, 3.62, 1.29, 149 IP, 144 K, 40 BB.
Arroyo 0-4 in last 8. OVERALL - 9-7, 3.31, 1.20, 157 IP, 124 K, 35 BB.
And about Jeter, no way. Your points don't make sense to anyone in this forum.

In the whole body of work, I'd still go with Harang. But you know as well as I do (at least I think you do) that these awards often go to guys who perform at the highest level late in the season when everything is on the line (see Vlad in 04 for example). Arroyo has pitched himself right out of the discussion (as well as any chance he may have had of winning this award).
But nice work on the column and thanks for engaging in an open debate. It's been fun.

You are definitely right about the late season being weighted more...which I guess I can thank for Chipper bringing home the MVP a few years ago. Thanks, I enjoy a good debate too.

Yes, because anyone who isn't the best player on their team at their position isn't a serious MVP candidate. If you use SBs as an argument for an MVP, clearly they are not an MVP candidate.

Let's see those RISP numbers between Ortiz and Jeter from the 7th inning on... who cares really? Apparently Ortiz does a better job of SCORING those runners in scoring position 105-65. Now, I'm not a big fan of RBIs as a telling stat, but FIFTY more RBIs is SIGNIFICANT.

A Most Valuable Player is a player that is THE reason why a team overacheives or at least exceeds expectations. The Yankees haven't exceeded anything. How many more games would the Yankees lose without Jeter? 1-2? The Red Sox would already be sunk without Ortiz. nuff said.

.354 is pretty, but Jeter is going to struggle to get 10HRs and 100 RBIs, that's NOT usually MVP material

Trust me Manny, I am not a Jeter-lover. In fact, I am a Braves fan and I hate the Yankees. I am under the belief that Jeter is one of the most overrated players of all-time; however, he deserves an MVP based on this year's performance. He has been "clutch" and has the numbers to back up an MVP. I think if we all looked at this objectively, we could see Jeter should be mentioned in the Top 5 at the very least. In my opinion, he is this year's MVP so far.

Actually, it should be more like 58 to 68, in favor of Ortiz. These are the number of RBIs if you don't count the times they drove themselves in on a HR. So, Ortiz has only driven in 10 more runners than Jeter total. If you look at their RBIs/AB with RISP. Ortiz has driven in .537 per at bat, while Jeter has driven in .545. Essentially, they have been about as effective at driving runners in. I think you have to also factor in Jeter is a SS and Ortiz is a DH. It would be much harder to find a bat like Jeter's to play short than a bat to play at DH.

Ortiz: Fine; Thome: not bad, I considered him, but I value DHs less than SS; Mauer: Fine; Hafner: Fine; Wells: he was probably #6 for me, because I don't think he has great range in center; Morneau: Good power, but unspectacular OBP, and plays at a deep position of talent; Dye: Good catch, he probably should be on here; Manny: Great, Great bat, but so TERRIBLE in left. Yes, he only has one error, but that is because he never gets to the ball; Vlad: haha, nice try, but not this year; Mags: that must be a joke, moving on; Tejada: definitely a good argument there. So, in total that gives us Ortiz, Thome, Mauer, Hafner, Wells, Dye, Tejada that you could put in the top 5. I think Tejada, Dye, Mauer and Ortiz have the best arguments to go ahead of Jeter, but I would only possibly agree with Ortiz based on the game-winning hits. Still, my vote is going to Jeter because of reasons I have already mentioned. Hopefully one of them clears themselves from the other in my mind by the time of my final predictions.
