The Colorado Avalanche traded their second-leading scorer Alex Tanguay to the Calgary Flames for defenseman Jordan Leopold and two draft picks just before the start of Saturday’s NHL Draft.
Tanguay had 29 goals and 49 assists last season, ranking him just behind Captain Joe Sakic.
Tanguay was drafted by the Avs 12th overall in the 1998 draft, and has been a major force for the team, with accomplishments including scoring the first and second goals in the Avs 3-1 victory in Game 7 of the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals.
Tanguay was rumored to be on the short list of players to be traded while looking for a goalie late last season. He was going to be an un-restricted free agent at the end of the up-coming season, and would most likely test the market for a better deal.
Leopold is a strong young defenseman, exactly what the Avs lacked during their recent playoff run. He scored 2 goals and added 18 assists for the division-rival Flames. He won the Hobey Baker award during his 2001-02 season at the University of Minnesota, which is college hockey’s equivalent to the Heisman.
The Avalanche also received a second-round pick in Saturday's draft, which was used to draft forward Codey Burki, and also a second-round selection in either the 2007 or 2008 draft.
