Avalanche resign Sakic

The Colorado Avalanche have re-signed their talismanic captain Joe Sakic to a 1 year contract worth $5.75m.

This keeps Sakic in second behind Steve Yzerman in terms of playing for the same team for so long, Sakic has played for Colorado for 17 years, Yzerman for Detroit has played 22 years.

Sakic would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if his contract hadn't been resigned.

He led the Avalanche in scoring this past season with 87 points and scored 30 goals for the eighth-straight year.

The Canadian Olympian has amassed 1,489 points during his career.

The shortness of the deal raises questions about the long-term future of the veteran forward, who celebrates his 37th birthday on July 7, 2006.

hmm...led the Avalanche with 87 points during the 2005-06 season and had nine points in the playoffs, including his NHL record-breaking seventh overtime goal. He will enter his 18th NHL season ranked 11th all-time in points (1,489), 15th in assists (915) and 17th in goals (574). I say good investment.

I wonder how much Sakic still has left in the gas tank. One year deal may mean that this upcoming sesom will be his last.

He said that he signed for one-year just in case he is injured. He want's to play two or three more years, but doesn't want to make the Avs have him as a detriment to the Salary Cap in case something happens.
