- The Melbourne Cricket Ground hosted the first Australian rules football game to be played at night. It was a promotional effort for electricity in the city of Melbourne.

- Famed pitcher Cy Young achieved his first (of 511) major league victory.

- Nineteen year old American, Gertrude Ederle, swam the English channel in 14 1/2 hours becoming the first American woman to do so.

- Mickey Cochrane was fired as the manager of the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers were 47-51 at the time of his dismissal. They would finish the season with a 84-70 record.

- Bob Mathias of the United States, wins the decathlon at the Games of the XIV Olympiad held in London, England.

- Luke Appling of the Chicago White Sox played the 2,154th game of his MLB career.

- Satchel Paige, aged 47, pitched a 12-inning shutout as the St. Louis Browns blanked the Detroit Tigers 1-0. In doing so he became the oldest player to complete a MLB game.

- The first home run to be hit completely out of Dodger Stadium occurred. Willie Stargell, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, hit the tape measure shot of 506 feet.

- Arsenal manager Terry Neill bought goalkeeper Pat Jennings from arch-rivals Spurs for a fee of £45,000.

- Lee Trevino was disqualified from the PGA Championship in Duluth, GA when he had his scorecard signed by Tom Weiskopf instead of himself.

- Barry Trotz is named as the first head coach of the Nashville Predators.
