  • MLB Hall-of-Famer Ty Cobb collects his 3,000th career base hit. At 34 years of age, he becomes the youngest player ever to do so.

  • Goose Goslin hits three straight home runs in a St. Louis Browns victory over the Philadelphia Athletics.
  • Chicago Cubs outfielder Hack Wilson hits his 43rd home run of the season, tying Chuck Klein's National League record. Ironically, Klein is in right field for the Cubs opponents, the Philadelphia Phillies.

  • Philadelphia Athletics hurler Lefty Grove wins his 16th consecutive game, tying Walter Johnson's American League record, as the A's beta the Chicago White Sox.

  • The fist ever Soap Box Derby is held in Dayton, Ohio.

  • Boston Red Sox Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams smashes his first Major League grand slam. The Sox win the game 8-6 over the Washington Senators.

  • MLB Hall-of-Famer Jimmie Foxx makes his first Major League start as a pitcher. He goes 7 innings against the Cincinnati Reds and earns the victoy, 6-2.

  • Chicago Cubs pitcher Ken Holtzman tosses a no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves. Ron Santo's 3-run homer provides Holtzman all the support he'll need in the Cubs' 3-0 victory.

  • Cincinnati Reds second-baseman Joe Morgan leaves after three innings in a 15-2 blow-out of the Phildalphia Phillies. In his abbreviated day, Morgan had 7 RBI (a grand slam and a three-run shot).

  • The cricket test match between England and Australia is called off after the pitch is vandalised by supporters of George Davis.

  • Kansas City Royals third-baseman George Brett is held hitless by Texas hurler Jon Matlack. The O-fer ends Brett's 30-game hit streak.

  • MLB slugger Rob Deer hits a grand slam against the Cleveland Indians. He'll hit another one the following day to become just the 11th player in MLB history to hit grand slams in consecutive games. In the same game, Paul Molitor's 4-hit effort extends his hit streak to 34 games.

  • Romesh Kaluwitharana of Sri Lanka scores 132 on Test Cricket debut against Australia.

  • Astros first-baseman Jeff Bagwell hits his 300th career home run. In doing so, he becomes the first player to hit 300 in an Astros uniform.
