August 17: A tragic day in baseball

Well, by now we all know of the Jose Offerman incident. He goes berserk with a bat, gets sent to jail, might be facing a ban. They're saying the guy could've been killed by that. Of course we remember the Coolbaugh incident a little while back, where he was killed by a line drive. As an Indians fan, these types of situations hit pretty close to home, for one pretty well-known reason.

Eighty-seven (87) years ago to the day was the death of Ray Chapman. After being beaned in the head by submarine-style pitcher Carl Mays. On August 16, Chapman was hit, only to die the next day. This site has a better article on it than I do, and it's be easier to read it there, but look at what happened with Mays. He was haunted by it, his whole family suffered tragedy in bizarre coincidences. And this was a legitimate accident. This goes to show you that the Offerman situation is very serious, at least in my view. We've come very far in the situation of the game, but you never know when something like that's gonna happen.

Not meant to be a very long article, just a little piece of nostalgia for you guys.

Mays was known as a headhunter in his days on the mound. As far as it haunting him, it didn't hurt him on the mound, as he went on to win 27 games in 1921, 20 games for Cincinnati in 1924, and 19 games for the Reds in 1926.

So as an Indians fan, how did you feel when you saw Chapman beaned?

It is a shame that someone so stupid would hit a guy in the head with a bat in the first place. I hope he survives. I wanna know how Jose Offerman feels now.

"I overreacted."

DAMN RIGHT YOU OVERREACTED!

albeit he was a major league baseball player but for someone who pitches "submarine style" to hit someone in the head intentionally would be damned impressive.
