Red Sox Pile It On in Day Game
The Boston Red Sox (29-12, 1st in AL East) extended their major-league leading record and demolished the visiting Atlanta Braves (25-17, 2nd in NL East) by a score of 13-3. Third baseman Mike Lowell had a heck of a day, going 4-5 with 4 RBI.

Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka (W, 6-2) pitched very strongly for the second straight outing, going 8 innings, striking out 6 and not walking anyone. He allowed three runs on nine hits. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had an RBI, and Jeff Francoeur hit a 2-run home run in the 7th. Edgar Renteria went 3-4 and raised his average to a club-leading .341.
In comparison, Lerew only lasted 2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits. Braves manager Bobby Cox was forced to use 5 relievers to finish the game, the worst of which being Mark Redman and Chad Poronto, who each allowed 4 earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. It will be an interesting evening for the Braves tonight as they head into the second game of the doubleheader.
