Braves Turn Tables on BoSox in Nightcap
Kelly Johnson was a single short of the cycle (hard to do) and John Smoltz (W, 6-2) fired 7 three-hit innings as the Atlanta Braves (25-17, 2nd in NL East, 2.5 GB) proper demolished the hometown Boston Red Sox (29-13, 1st in AL East) by a score of 14-0 in the second half of a day-night doubleheader.
| W: | John Smoltz | (6-2, 2.85, 0.57 |
| L: | Devern Hansack | (0-1, 7.71, -0.18 |
| S: | N/A | N/A |
Mere hours after the Red Sox crushed them 13-3, the Braves responded with an offensive show of force that was, well, offensive to Red Sox fans. Johnson had 5 RBI on a double, triple, and home run and six other Atlanta hitters knocked in runs. Edgar Renteria, after going 3-4 in the early game, was the only Braves player to be held hitless.
The Red Sox could not muster any support whatsoever for young Devern Hansack (L, 0-1), who left after the fourth with a bruised finger on his pitching hand. He had kept it close, allowing only 4 runs (3 earned) over 4, striking out 2 and walking one. The bullpen had its first really incredibly awful day, with Joel Pineiro, Javier Lopez, and Brendan Donnelly all giving up 3 earned runs or more during their time on the mound. The offense only had four baserunners on the day and only one (Coco Crisp on a double in the first) made it farther than first base.
- Smoltz: 72
- Hansack: 12

Coming Up Next: These two teams will play one more game at Fenway Park this afternoon, and the Red Sox better hope they can score some runs against a rejuvenated Tim Hudson (5-1, 1.77, 1.78). Young Kason Gabbard (NR, 3-1, 2.75 with Pawtucket) takes the hill for Boston.
