Athletes Destined for the Booth

by user MegECass110

So a lot of us saw the atrocity that is the Home Run Derby broadcast team; the combination of Berman and Morgan is bad enough, and they had to throw Dusty Baker in there just to make it borderline unwatchable. That, plus the absence of Harold Reynolds, ruined the 2007 Derby for me.

Anyway, it got me thinking, which current athletes would make great analysts/studio hosts in the future to replace these old geezers? I apologize if it seems like I'm being a homer. I have a starter list...

In the NFL:

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady: With all of their knowledge and understanding of both offense and defense, they'd be perfect. Putting them and together in the booth would be awesome. They're buddies, both have a sense of humor and aren't boring.

Chad Johnson: I'd order DirecTV just to watch the games he would do. Good God, I can only imagine the stuff he would come up with.

Teddy Bruschi: Intense, articulate, likeable.

Mike Vanderjagt: Just kidding. I'd like to think of him as a smaller, NFL version of John Kruk.

In MLB:

David Wright: I'd watch him with the mute button on. Yumm. I would continue but I assume the gentlemen reading this would rather me not.

Jason Varitek: Knowledge of pitchers and hitters is ridiculous. If he doesn't get into coaching, he should get into this.

Ken Griffey: Very likable personality, people would root for him to do well in whatever he does.

In the NBA:

Shaq: Self-explanatory.

Hockey fans, fend for yourselves. Let's get some more suggestions going...

I saw Shaq on TNT with Barkley and those guys and he was surprisingly very quiet. He didn't have much to say, and when he did, he mumbled.

yeah Shaq is a great interview but he is not so great to sit in the big chair and drive the bus.

I can see Billy Wagner doing Baseball Tonight, if that counts.

He'd be better than Fernando Vina, Eduardo Perez, Eric Young and Dusty Baker, I'm sure.

I've been impressed with Keyshawn Johnson. Even if he's been stuck on that pure shiat who's now, he's well spoken and has a clue......about a exact opposite of Michael Irvin....

Keyshawn's been very good, I agree. He's very articulate, but outrageous and funny enough to make you like him and ALMOST not like him. I'm one of the few people who doesn't mind Michael Irvin, Keyshawn is the more toned-down version of him.

Ooh, another Michael fan. I can't not like him, being a life long Cowboys fan, but sometimes the dude comes unglued like a wet piece of paper.....

Imagine this combo: Tom Brady and Pam Ward. Tom finds the one woman he doesn't want to impregnate.

You probably don't live in New England, but he is extremely well-spoken, isn't hostile towards the media, answers the questions that are asked of him (unless he loses very badly), and makes everyone laugh. He can clearly handle the spotlight and he learns from his mistakes. I think he'd be great.

Its not that Brady isn't a nice or geniunely good guy...I agree with BigP, I haven't seen anything that makes me think, "hey, maybe that guy'd be good in the booth"

And i live in new england...

OK, so maybe my undying love for him has taken precedence, but you have to admit, he'd be better than a lot of the NFL guys today.

Bill Simmons would be the ultimate for me. Apparently he's done some play by play for ESPNU. I love his writing, I don't know how he translates it to tv without getting himself in trouble, though.

Oh my god. Here's what that would sound like

CC: I told you it would happen. I told you... BS: Boston, Vegas, I live in Cali now. CC: [Something incoherently screamed] BS: Celtics suck, they should trade for Kobe and Tom Brady should play PG CC: Did I remind you I was brilliant?

BS: So my wife says ______

Simmons is strictly a writer...I don't think he would do well in the booth...needs time to think and articulate...which is a problem for a lot of analysts...

Have you ever heard Bill Simmons speak? He has the whiniest, high pitched voice ever. You know the expression, "he's got a face for radio?" Well, Bill Simmons has a voice for blogging.

Bill Simmons is a great sportswriter but i do not know about being in the booth. I've listened to his podcast before and i couldn't stand his voice for more than 5 minutes. To JoshKross, you obviously don't have a sense of humor if you do not like Simmons or must be from NY or both.

That's another thing-his voice on the podcast can get irritating after a while. I say he sticks to writing the column.

Simmons USED to be awesome. I loved him. Now he sucks. I am from NY, but I'm not a Yankee fan, and have no beef whatsoever from Boston. He sucks now because of all the following reasons:
  1. He no longer has the curse and the Sox oppression to bitch about
  2. He moved to California and got soft
  3. He talks way too much about himself and the OC (or whatever show he's watching today)
  4. He keeps making the same references
  5. The sports gal is cooler than him
  6. He wishes he were on Entourage
  7. His ego has explodeded.
I can go on, but humor is subjective, jabroni. If you want someone funny from Boston, stick to Dennis Leary.

Meg - please stay away from Tom. He already has visions of playing the lead role in the movie version of The Eagles "Take It Easy".
