Athlete Spotting

So I'm at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY (25 miles east of Syracuse). I'm playing $100 max buy-in no-limit hold em. A few tables down the row sits one Dwight Freeney. He's playing $200 max buy-in no-limit.

That's not too odd, I guess. Freeney went to Syracuse University, and he's from the Northeast, so I guess it isn't too strange to see him in a casino on a Wednesday evening.

But what is odd, is that he was playing $200 max, when there was a $500 max game going. This is a guy who just signed a $72 million deal, with a $30 million signing bonus. Yet he only put up $200 to play poker. I guess maybe some athletes actually do have financial restraint and can make smart decisions with money.

Maybe he just likes to play poker? I think that's great...

True. You know, it's somewhat refreshing to see an NFL player having fun doing something like playing a low level game of poker. There are no dog fights at Turning Stone, no hooker boats, and I'm pretty sure that the Bengals would be bored out of their mind there.

The one time an athlete tries to be responsible with his money, and you rip him for not gambling away enough? Yet when Barkley or Daily do it, it's a sin that they gamble so much.

I'm not ripping him, I just thought it was odd.
