Astros fire skipper Phil Garner

Woah!!  Something big was talked about on ESPN today besides Michael Vick pleading guilty.  It's a miracle, ESPN took 20 seconds off the Vick discussion to talk about the Houston Astros firing manager Phil Garner, but after about 20-30 seconds were back on the Vick topic.  Well, anyway, the Astros needed a change, although Garner did take them to the world series in 2005.  The Astros fired GM Tim Purpura as well. Garner, the Astros skipper since midway through the 2004 season, had a career record of 277-252 with the Astros.  Garner had a pretty good career as the Astros manager i'd say.  But, the Astros needed a change (the Astros are 58-73 this year, 5th place in the NL Central).  The blame for the Astros failure this year shouldn't be put on Garner, but it's always the manager that gets the blame for failure.

I wouldn't expect Garner to be on the market for too long, he is just a good manager.  I expect him to be hired by a team sometime this offseason, if not, then many teams are making a big mistake.

Garner's not that great. The only reason they fired him this close to the end of the season is because every year that the Astros struggled, they always made a run during the second half of the season. Not so much this year, though. It was inevitable.

Garner is just a scapegoat for the poor play. It's nice to see they got the man to blame (Purpura) out of there too.

Drayton McLane got tired of losing but like BBall wrote it was good Purpura was let go too. Too many players were having off years this year especially Ensberg who plays for Padres and is just as bad as he was with Astros. He has a total of 3 home runs and 6 RBI's with all those coming in two games. He had two home runs and 4 RBI's on August 2nd then hit a home run with 2 RBI's on the 14th of August but in his other 12 games has no homers or RBI's. Padres finally benched him and he has not played in last seven games.

It was time for Garner and Purpura to go. They made too many poor judgments when it came to free agency, passing on pieces that could have benefitted them while keeping players that were not up to par (Richard Hidalgo comes to mind.) After Biggio got his 3000th hit, and announced his retirement, Houston should have done the same thing Texas has done with Sosa, curtail his playing time and start seeing what you have for next season.

Wow both MLB teams in Texas have black managers. Does that mean the world is coming to an end?

In my opinion, I don't believe this was a good decision by the Astros (firing Garner in the middle of the season). Besides this year, he has an Astros' Winning Percentage of .550. He's already won a division title with them with almost the same batting roster, but he has absolutely no pitching, except Roy Oswalt. Besides Oswalt, Chad Qualls, and Brad Lidge, every other pitcher's ERA is above 4.50, and the offense isn't helping, especially with the fact that Hunter Pence is currently injured. If you're going to fire a skipper who once had managerial talent, unless he's affecting the team chemistry negatively or is above 90 and cannot walk to the mound to change pitchers, I wouldn't fire him in the middle of the season, because it could affect the players.

What makes Drayton McLane think Cecil Cooper can manage better than Garner? They still have the same players. Perpura made a huge mistake by not calling up Pence sooner or even better starting the season with him. He was near the top in several categories in spring training yet was sent down and Chris Burke started the season in center field. Burke played so badly they had no choice but to call up Pence. Jason Lane and Morgan Ensberg both had terrible seasons. Adam Everett may be one of the best shortstops in baseball but is still out and hitting only .228. Mike Lamb is hitting .293 but has only one home run since the 21st of July and it will be September in just a few days.
