Astros Not Likely to Sign Bagwell

4
Vote

The Houston Astros will likely part ways with the long-time face of their franchise, Jeff Bagwell, by declining the 2007 option on his contract. Bagwell missed all of the 2006 season with a shoulder injury. The Astros will pay $7 million to forgoe paying Bagwell $18 million next season. The aging slugger still hopes to play in the majors, but will likely finish this 16-year career ending with a .297 average, 449 HR, and two 30-30 campaigns.

I think he needed 500 homers to reach the hall.

There's no doubt that he should make the Hall.

I think he should make the Hall. Having these numeric barriers people have to break to make the Hall is ridiculous, especially when you consider some of the mediocre players that have come close to or are on pace for 500 in the last few years. Based on what he did WHEN HE WAS PLAYING, Bagwell should be in the Hall. We should admit players based on what they did when they were playing. I wouldn't hold an injury against Sandy Koufax when considering his admittance into the Hall, and I don't think they should do the same for Bagwell. It's not his fault he has an arthritic shoulder.

His 1994 season was ridiculous with a .368/.451/.750! Oh, and he threw in 15 stolen bases and a Gold-Glove in case those numbers weren't good enough for you. Hands down MVP of that season.

I've been a fan of Bagwell and the Astros have been my favorite NL team for a long time. I really hate to see his career end the way it did (more because of last offseason), and I've lost some respect for the franchise because of this whole debacle.
